WebRTC - Use your browser as skype :)

Chrome and FireFox has implemented WebRTC (Web Realtime Communication) standard, so you can transfer data (audio, video, file) in realtime to another browser window. So its like Skype live video calls, but without any additional plugins or software. Its in-built to your browser.

I haven’t got a chance to play around with it much, but there are plenty of demos available online. Have you got a chance to look in to it ?

Plus I think it will revolutionize the communication industry. Anything with a browser and the Internet would be able to make live calls, anywhere you want.

Try it yourself on different browsers or with a friend (https://apprtc.appspot.com/)

Looks promising. I connected through the URL and was able to share my mic and webcam. Looks great as well. Hoping this will end the monopoly skype and viber has on video calls.

I think we have bigger threat from the government when it comes to communication . WebRTC gives you encrypted communication and plus its peer to peer. So nothing goes to server , other than initial handshake . They have also added it to Chrome Beta for Android, so it would be great to use your handheld device .

Re: WebRTC - Use your browser as skype :)

You just nailed it Nami. WebRTC is not getting any traction. The govt doesn't want independant encryption (without backdoors, unlike Skype). Microsoft is straight competition, Apple is not best of friends with Google. Yahoo is a good contender but they have partnerships with M$ (which seems to be dwindling, so there's hope there).

Firefox is supporting as Google is financing a big chunk of their operations. As with most tech its all about lobying it. Google keeps making waves but its ruffling a lot of feathers. What with Google Fiber and Project Loon, its taking on the world, FTW!

Re: WebRTC - Use your browser as skype :)

True, but there are two major factors here. First WebRTC is not only for p2p communication, but p2p data transfer. It means that you can download data on one client and can share it across different clients. Now think about Netflix or Hulu. Right now their model is that everyone downloads from server, which is HUGE load on machines/bandwidth. What if they change their data sharing model with WebRTC, and instead of downloading same movie over and over again, they can let it download ones and after that it will be shared among clients. More like torrents.

Second factor is that WebRTC is pretty new and more like POC for now. As soon as big companies will start using it, then all other browsers will have to adopt to it. More like WebSockets. Plus telecom industry is in hot waters already. Sooner or later everything will be IP based anyways. I think WebRTC is way forward. Anything with a web browser is now your communication device.

^^I agree. It should also support the mobile browsers so you could basically take the conversation/video that's happening with the computer and mirror it on the mobile browser to go.

Re: WebRTC - Use your browser as skype :)

^^ Its supported on Android Chrome Beta ... its getting there ... we just have to wait

Re: WebRTC - Use your browser as skype :)

Seems to work on the Linux Chromium browser as well.
