Wearing Nail Polish

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is in the right topic area, but what are the religious aspects towards wearing nail polish? Can you wear it when reading namaaz/daily day to day etc?

My mum’s always said you can’t wear it and i’ve always wondered why?

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

Water cannot penetrate if nailpolish is present. Therefore even wudhu is not valid.

If a person passes away whilst they had worn nailpolish, then it is more than likely (rather incumbent) to remove it as the purpose of the ghusl is to make the deceased paak (pure). This would not be achieved if nailpolish was not removed.

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

u can apply it before doing wudu :D

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

yes as chanel 1122 mentions its 100% right.

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

What Chanel said is correct..

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

before wadhu? I think she meant to say after wadhu. So that water wod have passed to ur nails and than you apply nail polish being pak. but then if ur wadhu breaks due to any circumstances, you 'll have to removie the nail polish and do wadhu.

I personally believe in not applying the nail polish for namaz.

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

ivee been hearing it alot of times too , but wht about water proof makeup and mascara , water cant penetrate there too . actually we need some hadith particularly stating that water should be penetrated in the nails , but then again water sips off the surface whether polish is on or off . i read a hadith stating very clearly that water should touch your heels , but never came across that about nails . just curious if anybody can provide an authentic hadith on the subject .

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

I believe u meant After wadu not before wadu. Your wadu is not valid with nail polish as per my limited knowledge. For me it has always been a hassle to take it off or take it on so I just put it on during my special days :silly:
My saloon wali always wonders why the hell I pay so much for the mani/padi when I dun even put color on

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

haha ditto!

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

you can apply after wudhu :)

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

Yeh i would like to know an authentic hadith aswell - i personally don't wear nail varnish myself but would like to know if there's anything in Islam to say that nail varnish is permitted or not?

Thanks for all the answers guys :)

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When the Muslim - or believing - slave does wudu' and washes his face, every wrong thing at which his eyes have looked leaves with the water - or with the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, every wrong thing which his hands have touched leaves with the water - or with the last drop of water. When he washes his feet. every wrong thing to which his feet have walked leaves with the water – or with the last drop of water, until he emerges cleansed of sins." There's another hadith that I can't find right now (if someone knows, please do share!) The jist of it is that a man was doing wudu' and he left his heels dry.. the Prophet SAW told him to repeat his wudu' and this time include his heels and said 'Save your heels from the fire'. Because every part that you don't wash, will be touched by the fire in the Hereafter. Logically this means that u do wudu' in a pure state (without nailpolish/make up/ etc.), the women in the time of the Prophet did not wear nailpolish either, did they? So as far as I understand, you're supposed to take off your nail polish before doing wudu and u can put it on again after wudu. Allahu'aalim.

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

Ah thanks for that^ :) it was very helpful!

Re: Wearing Nail Polish

I don't have a link to this but i heard a Hadith probably at a darse or my parents told me that once a women had aata on her nail which prevent the water to reach her nail she was asked to remove that and redo her wudu. That was back in Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) days I don't have an authenticated source I couldn't put exactly what happened but this situation is similar to nail polish.
