My tot is 13 months now and just after she turned one i weaned her off formula milk onto cows milk, she took to the milk ok but the milk has made her stools VERY hard and very difficult to pass. She is in so much distress when she goes it breaks my heart to see her like that i feel helpless
I have done all the usual like giving her fruits, juice, more water , prunes but nothing has really helped so i had to resort to my doctor who then gave some lactulose to soften the stools. Her sister was like this too but i don’t remember her being this bad, I hope this passes soon as i don’t want her to be using the medication too long.
Anyone else had this with their baby? When did it get better?

My daughter had the same exact reaction to cows milk! I felt so helpless. She couldn’t pass stool without being in extreme pain.
I asked her dr what to do. I actually think I’ve taken her to the dr’s at least 10 times just to discuss her stool issue. Her stool was literally as hard as rock!!!
Her Dr was an idiot. She would just smile and tell me to give her more fiber. Well that didn’t work at all. We tried everything! Extra water. 2% milk. Fiber and more fiber. Less milk and more fiber rich food etc etc. Nothing worked on my girl! This went on for about a year. We even tried prune juice, she would just spit it out.
It got so bad that by the time she was 2 she would just refuse to go when she needed to and hold it inside. And it would just get harder and worse At this point we would just use laxatives, again recommended by her idiot Dr.
Anyway. What did work for her was mixing 1 part milk with 1 part prune juice. The milk would conceal the icky flavor of the prune juice. She got used to it after a while and started liking it. This REALLY helped my daughter.
Do something asap. I would hate for anyone to go through what we (and mostly my daughter) went through.

Cows milk not a very good idea till atleast 2 years. My daughter started it at year 1, developed anemia and stomach issues, till we put her back again to formula.

we add certain.herbs to the milk while.boiling. i.e. few grains i.e 3 to 4 only, of fennel and few of whole dried corriander. mine doesnt/didnt show any poop.problems so far
This was an issue with my soon too. I wanted him to be on cow milk at 1 but because of constipation he was on formula for 1.5 years. transition from formula to cow milk was slow. if he had 3 bottles a day, I would give him 2 with formula and one that had skim milk and miralax. It worked. Slowly his stomach got used to cow’s milk. He is going to be 3 soon but I still have to give him skim milk with 2/3 water and 1/3 milk or he gets constipated.

Its s stressful when they can’t go isn’t it!
Mirage I tried that for a few days, I boiled her milk in a pan for the day along with fennel seeds, ajwain and ilaichi but it didn’t make any difference. I give her fruit everyday, one day i gave her pear and i was out the next morning and dh told me her poop was normal and he didn’t even know she had done anything till he picked her up but since then she has had pear but to no avail.
I will go to see my health visitor this week because my gp said they know more about these things and what to give them diet wise than the docs so i will pop in on Thursday.
The lactulose has helped a bit it is just a mission getting her to take it she goes crazy i have to sneak up behind her when she is in her high chair to feed her from the syringe!
Wendy my doc also said similar to what you had with your daughter that once the brain clocks on they stop themselves from going making matters even worse. May Allah grant shifa to these little bubbas inshAllah. I will give feedback after seeing the health visitor hopefully we get more advice from her.

maybe you increase her water intake. mine doesnt get constipated really but I know even a sp of gripe water has her go. thats another reason.I dont give her gripe water regularly inspite of my mom and mil all gaga about it. If you have not, maybe you try gripe water.
I don’t give her gripe water anymore since she was really little but I guess there is no harm in trying.
As I type she is drinking her milk with a bit if prune juice mixed in, she did make a face to begin with but all is good now. She also had chopped prunes in her weetabix too…i am obsessed with her poops now lol
