Wealth & Arrogance

please share if you like, one reason as to why people who become rich, become so full of them selves?

what is the disadvantage/s they set themselves up for (and yet they are not aware of it or deny it, because their arrogance gets the better of them just as soon as they become wealthy?)

& what can other people do to make arrogant wealthy people take a darn hard look at the poverty of their sensibility?

Peace Sister

One main reason is because those (who do not fear God) begin to believe that their wealth has given them 'power' to dispose over others. Arrogance is a state of weakness because it breeds complacency, laziness and ineffective evaluation of the situation on the other side of the fence. Such people are blind to the comprehensiveness of viewpoint and no blind person is superior to an able sighted person in vision, except in his own mind.

It is like being in an ambient lit room and one can see everything, but when wealth comes his way, it is as if a bright localised light has been placed in front him and he sees nothing except what is in close proximity of the light.

Those people who see wealth follow the scent of it. People with wealth believe themselves to have what those others need and sets up the conditions of giver-taker.

Sun-Tzu said something to the effect of "Do not give your army luxuries for it shall make them lazy and arrogant".

Re: Wealth & Arrogance

brother pyah,

well said. absolutely. running after money may be for meeting basic needs for living a nomral, secure, comfortable and decent life. but, it should not be for endless greed to be fulfilled in vain.

thanks for the light example. it makes sense.

Re: Wealth & Arrogance

Nothing. But bare in mind, not every wealthy individual has the same mindset and possesses arrogance.

At the end of the day, it is always up to the individual how they behave and present themselves to the world, with or without money. Nobody has the right to force a rich person to do anything with their money.

Some were born into wealth, and some came from destitute situations to the most luxurious. There's a different story behind every persons financial status.

However, I do understand what you are saying about being arrogant, it's human nature, if you have excessive amounts of something, you feel somewhat on a higher level than those around you. You feel the need to boast or just behave in a different way. But this is when it gets out of control.

Re: Wealth & Arrogance

money and power corrupts even very good believers and all of us are vulnerable to it as well

Re: Wealth & Arrogance

Hmmm...... Personally, I don't believe people become arrogant after becoming rich. It takes ages to form character and personality. I believe there must pre-exist a rogue element in the personality to appear prominently at a later stage: when the situation becomes suitable. So most likely a person who becomes arrogant after becoming rich must have that trait earlier, but because the circumstances were not favourable that trait was suppressed.

Re: Wealth & Arrogance

corruption of the affluent is bad. & corruption of the poor due to affluent becomes bad too.

simple life is not hard to have. people just are not perceptive enough to realize that it is actually better for their ownselves to be less burdened.
