Is there any cure for this? Say it was caused by previous births and miscarriages?
Re: Weak Cervix
As far as I know, the remedy for an imcompetant cervix is what they call a “cervical stitch”
Cervical cerclage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A weak or imcompetant cervix is usually dealt with in the second trimester, I don’t know if it’s something that you address before you’re actual pregnant, but an OB/Midwife will know best given previous history
Re: Weak Cervix
my cousn had this issue, she got her stiched first at 20 weeks thn 28 weeks and thn at 34 weeks, n she was on complete bed rest n she was not allowed to take any heavy food mostly liquid or semi solid so tht there is no pressure while passing stool
Re: Weak Cervix
If you have this concern, speak to the doc about it asap. I’ve heard of people who would’ve lost their babies if they didn’t have it by 14 weeks.
Re: Weak Cervix
There’s no solution to it, is there? I mean even with stitching you’ll be taking risk?
Re: Weak Cervix
there is no risk after stitching unless you carry heavy loads or not take rest…it depends on the diameter of the cervix too…
like others said its better to go for surgery in 12-16 weeks of pregnancy otherwise there is a chance of miscarriage because of the gaining weight of baby…
my relative went though this…she had her cerclage done in 13th week…and they opened her stitches in 39th week…she had a baby few days back..she wasnt on bedrest but took more rest than a normal healthy pregnant woman…
and it was her first ever pregnancy so i dont think weak cervix is caused by previous miscarriages…
Re: Weak Cervix
See your GP and be referred to an obstetrician as soon as you conceive. The stitching is the solution as mentioned above, and as long as you are careful, InSha Allah all would be ok.
Re: Weak Cervix
Thank you ladies. I’m not planning on anymore kids…not until few more years. But I’m kinda scared of getting pregnant coz of damaged cervix.
Re: Weak Cervix
Weak cervix was the reason of my miscarriage at 21 weeks. My pregnancy after the miscarriage was monitored very closely and i didn’t need to get any stitches either, my body healed it self.
Re: Weak Cervix
Please save yourself from the pain of losing a child and look into getting a prepregnancy abdominal cerclage. I will strongly urge you to look up the website Abbyloopers Home.
That website saved my son’s life, as I got this surgery done at 12 weeks of pregnancy.
I lost three children due to a very weak cervix. One at 18 weeks and my twins at 21 weeks. The pain of losing a child is much worse than anything anyone can imagine and getting this surgery was well worth all the physical pain. I now have a full-term healthy baby boy (who will turn 2 next month).
If you have any questions about it pm me. I will be more than happy to share my story with you.
Re: Weak Cervix
There are many different ways to deal with an incompetent cervix. It can be caused by damage from previous deliveries, procedure on the cervix like LEEP, or just merely being born with a weak cervix. I am one of the unfortunate ones to be born with a weak cervix :(. I lost my son in my first pregnancy after a spontaneous complete rupture of membranes at 18 weeks.
Now the treatments are a temporary cerclage of the cervix which is best placed as a preventive procedure around 13 weeks. There are two types depending in what your dr ends up doing; a McDonald or a shirodkar.
Another treatment is a permanent stitch called a tvcic which only Dr. Davis in NJ performs and the success rate is like 98% or something. This procedure is also performed by a few drs around the world.
Lastly there is a TAC, transabdominal cerclage, performed via a c-section either pre pregnancy or up to 13 weeks of pregnancy I believe. Many drs around the US and some around the world perform this procedure. This is a permanent band at the top of your cervix and has a success rate of 99% or something.
If anyone wants more info you can inbox me since I feel like educating women on this topic. This can happen to anyone (God forbid) and I certainly never knew I can rupture so early in my pregnancy. This is why, my opinion, it is good to be cautious in the second trimester since apparently that is when the baby’s weight is mostly on your cervix.
Hareem if you still want information feel free to send me a message. I’m currently pregnant again with a preventive cerclage alhumdulalilah.
Re: Weak Cervix
Sorry to sound ignorant but how does one find out about a damaged or weak cervix? And at what stage of the pregnancy?
Re: Weak Cervix
Sometimes it can be caught during an ultrasound. In unfortunate cases like mine your water breaks early. This happens in the second trimester.
