We have to pick up the Pieces – This time without the PPP

In a time, of fragility, in a time where decisions are as important as they ever were, and in a time when the nation requires a leader who will take Pakistan forward with his vision out of darkness and in to the light of prosperity, Bilawal Bhutto was chosen by the self proclaimed “largest political party in Pakistan” to be their Co –Chairman and the individual responsible to lead the party towards glory, victory and treasures unseen.

Very little is known about Bilawal Bhutto, but what is known is that he most certainly is not currently fit to be the chairman of a political party. The PPP is not a paan shop, whom anyone can run…or is it?

By selecting Bilawal Bhutto as Chairman, the PPP has proved itself to be a mere shell of it’s glorious past. Is the leadership well soo shallow that Bilawal Bhutto is what’s left?

By no means, is this article a tirade of insults against the PPP, and their new leader Bilawal Bhutto. I would like to note that in the very rare public appearances Bilawal has made, he seemed, smart, mature and strong willed for his age. But the following is also true;
  • Bilawal Bhutto can not speak the native/national tongue of Pakistan. The national literacy rate of Pakistan as of 2007 is 50%. This means that for 80 million Pakistani’s Bilawal Bhutto can be accurately described as a foreign alien. Perhaps the magic of a translator will be required? But then again, how many political parties have such a problem? Maybe, the PPP is starting a trend?

  • Bilawal Bhutto has not suffered with the people of Pakistan, and he has not celebrated with the people of Pakistan. Has he then earned the right to lead the people of Pakistan?

  • Bilawal Bhutto, as stated by Mr.Zardari is of “tender age”. He is a mere nineteen years old. Is he emotionally stable to lead a political party? Is he mature enough to lead a political party? Has he earned enough life experience to hold such a powerful/demanding position? I recall, when I was nineteen years old, I was more concerned about hiding my pack of cigarettes from my father! Maybe, that was just me?

  • Bilawal Bhutto holds no political experience what so ever; unless you consider the post of President of School Council, as having substantial merit. Maybe he performed a miracle for the School Council to get such a promotion…that makes sense…right? Perhaps critics will point out, that he has been surrounded and groomed by politicians since his early life. But, for them I pose the following question;

Would you allow an individual who has lived in a hospital since birth, (but holds no doctorate on health sciences) to perform heart surgery on your loved ones?

  • Bilawal Bhutto has not lived in Pakistan, which means that he would not be educated on the ethnic factionalism and the ground realities of Pakistan. How then will he be able to make appropriate decisions for the people of Pakistan?

    Most certainly, one could carry on stating the flaws in the PPP’s decision to name Bilawal Bhutto as Co - Chairman, but I believe my point has been made.

    Some may point out, that he is “just a” Co-Chairman, and that Mr.10%…I mean Mr.Zardari; will make the decisions for the party until Bilawal becomes acclimated with the culture, language, and the political landscape of Pakistan.

But then, one must question why was Bilawal named co-chairman to begin with? Would not the title of lame duck be more appropriate? Was he the best candidate for Co-Chairmanship? What will Bilawal do if, something happens to Zardari? What then?

It’s quite clear that Bilawal was named Co-Chairman to blind the masses with his new last name…Bhutto. Unfortunately it’s apparent that the PPP’s criteria for selecting their leaders (And the future leaders of Pakistan) is based on the candidate’s line of lineage and not based on the candidates credentials, political experience or accomplishments.

Selecting Bilawal is a tragedy for the people of Pakistan and equally a tragedy for Bilawal himself. In a matter of hours he lost his mother, had his name changed, and became the leader of a political party which has aspirations to lead a country he knows nothing about!

The older generations of Pakistani’s tell me of a time, when the improvised, disheartened, betrayed Pakistani’s looked up to the PPP; to provide them with hope, encouragement and a vision for the future. But to them I say, with great regret, that time has passed and has been buried by none other than the current PPP.

To quote the great Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto “We are facing the worst crisis in our country’s life, a deadly crisis, we have to pick up the pieces, the very small pieces, but we have to make a new Pakistan, a free and prosperous Pakistan…”…yes we do have to pick up the pieces…but this time without the leadership of the PPP.
