We speak better English than Indians: Musharraf
Indo-Asian News Service
Washington, September 23
Asserting “we speak better English than the Indians”, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said that the trend of outsourcing jobs to India from the US was soon going to change.
Musharraf, who came here Wednesday for five hours to launch the Congressional Caucus on Pakistan, told a crowd of Pakistani Americans that his country was changing, its image was changing and the trend of outsourcing jobs to India should also change with that “because we speak better English than the Indians”.
This caused a lot of laughter in the audience in which the president also joined.
He said the “new” Pakistan, which was seeking to project itself as a moderate, progressive nation where violence and fundamentalism had no place, was characterized by the rise of hope and all Pakistanis should be proud of that.
He urged them to stand up for Pakistan and counter criticism, “even if it (criticism) is right” - his remarks again evoking much laughter.
Musharraf also promised to build the world’s tallest building in Pakistan and regretted that the country had not won a single medal at the Athens Olympics.
Ok where did he say that we are better than Indians. All he said was that we speak better english. Stop trying to twist words and start another flame war.
As far as his point about standing against criticism, then i completely agree. I despise people who air out dirty laundry, especially when it comes to Pakistan.
Hmm, if Musharaf was joking around, I would just overlook his comments in that case. If he was serious in saying what he said regarding the fact that we speak better English than the Indians , he didn't scored much on that front. I got some coments yesterday by my friends on his statement and not many people approved of his remarks.
It is obvious that he was just joking. He was speaking to an assembly of Pakistanis and laughed alongside them at what is clearly an inside joke mocking how petty Pakistan and India's rivalry tends to get at times.
If some on this forum lack a sense of humour, that's their problem, not the General's.

Ya mon…
You said it bro, it was just a little bit of harmless humour. I dont think anyone else who is talking was present at the event so
public ko toh baat ka batangar banany ka shauq hai..bila wajah rona dhona.
Musharraf also promised to build the world's tallest building in Pakistan

This will provide good target practice for some Pakistanis - just like the target practice Talibans had against 'Bamiyan Buddhas'.
With regards to English. I agree, Pakistanis do speak better English than the Indians in New York. Especially in the way they ask 'where to sir' in the most eloquent tone. :)

Although I agree that Pakistanis do speak better english than indians, I think in the example you gave us, it is the words and not the accent that make a difference, because you are comparing this to indians in NYC asking 'which pump your car at'
I just do not want to have a conflagration on the English accent but In can surely tell you that both Indians and Pakistanis at Sanjose(Bay area) speak almost in a same accent. :p
(ESPECIALLY WHEN CHARGING MORE ON DESHI FOODS ) iNDIA -pAK BHAI BHAI :D
just another reason he provided to the people who say he is a dummy, (me), indians speak better english but our accent is way better, he can claim taht but at least they have a democracy and they r not killing their own people!
gesto mah man, I am kidding, just like the pres was...:)
Jazba,
1) Were we not killing our own people even when we had democracy? If i recall correctly, there was quite a bit of sectarian and ethnic bloodshed in teh country while our "elected" leaders efficiently looted the country.
2) India not killing its own people? IN kashmir they deal with what we call freedom fighters and they call insurgents in the same manner as we are now forced to deal with the foriegners who are following the "maan na maan, mein tera mehmaan" approach.

^ he does indeed, but compared to a typical south indian accent the UP accent sounds like that of a native speaker.

sorry for a late post. I think south Indians speak better English than Northerners (Except some `aristocratic'Delhilites)
