Human are divided and treated differently by birth in Hinduism. Trades are assigned to them only after and according to their birth!
Even Gandhi had to ask permission to leave India and pursue law from his sub-caste Modh Bania (Bania= Merchant) That's right according to hinduism caste system he was only good for being a merchant.
As per hinduism untouchables (polluted laborers) are not even caste and are called outcastes.

(2) It was total meritocracy
