You cannot help but sit and applaud this amazing australian team. I thought that i will turn tv off when their victory is assured. But i could not wait to see some of truly greats lifting yet another cup which they truly deserved. Rest of the world has to play catch up cricket again.

So true. It's been like that since 1999!

Arey darn. A female threw her shirt at Gilchrist and camera angle changed. Manhoosiat!
I am going to give you the benefit of doubt by guessing that being a dhobi (washer) you are envious of Gillie getting to do the cleaning for her...you missed out on this one...
Cause otherwise...I need to report you to Mrs. Dhobi....
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
A fitting end to the most ridiculous Cricket Tournament in History
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
Positives of this tournament:
-Emergence of Ireland
-Emergence of Bangladesh
-England v West Indies match
Negatives
-Pakistan being the first team booted out
-Bob Woolmer....you know.....dieing.
-The farce surrounding the Woolmer murder investigation
-India being the second team booted out
-Zimbabwe slipping even further down in their quality of play
-The farce surrounding the Woolmer murder investigation
-Crappy play from England
-Crappy play from the host West Indies
-The farce surrounding the Woolmer murder investigation
-The farce surrounding the end of the final match of the world's third most watched sporting event
-80% of the fans in every match, except the opener and the final, dressed as empty seats...
and worst of all
-Another showcase of the discrepency between the quality of Australian cricket and the rest of the world
Good luck attracting more fans ICC. Try to gain back the millions who probably vowed never to watch cricket again before trying to make new fans.
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
Why Jayawradene did not concede defeat is just beyond me
Because someone conceding a world cup final will look ridiculous in the record books. Australia's win would probably have been unjustly listed with an asterisk on the side. I am glad they decided to play it out, even though the fact that there was an erroneous celebration in between is truly symbolic of the entire tournament.
And Aleem Dar was just doing his job. I'm glad that he didn't let it slip through. You know someone would have brought it up sooner or later. He would have taken more flak then.
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
^ yeah technically he was doing his job but i think he lacked some common sense. even tho it is technically in the books, i felt like he was on a vendetta against aussies when he disallowed run against clarke, no warning to him, it was his first ball, imagine if Hair did that against pakistan, i can only imagine what the reaction would be...(inzi would probably not come out after lunch lol)

Good point. Agreed he did a good job there
It was like a no-win situation for him and I suppose he made the right decision in the end however absurd and ridiculous it looked at the time
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
Why didn't ICC get a Stadium which has night lights ?
I mean how stupid is this of ICC Management that they are hosting a Final Game in a stadium which has no night lights

Even if they had flood lights in the ground the match would still have had to be played in natural light (as per ICC rules) since it was not a day-night game. Don't ask me who makes these ridiculous rules but that's how it is
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
wow^
if this disaster of a tournament doesn't make them resign then what will
we might have to force the issue

Actually looking at the whole thing again, the on-field umpires Bucknor and Dar got it wrong. 33 overs had been bowled by then (20 overs constitutes a match) and there was no need for the players to come out again and finish the game or for Jaya to concede defeat (hence no need for asterisk etc. as you put it). Rudi seemed even more confused about the rules with his out of the box suggestion of completing the remaining three overs the next day! Thank God it did n't come to that and an even greater farcical situation was avoided
Cricket-World Cup referee Crowe admits error
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, April 29 (Reuters) - - World Cup match referee Jeff Crowe admitted that Sri Lanka had been mistakenly asked to come back on the field for a final three overs in the rain-reduced World Cup final against Australia. Australia were celebrating their third consecutive World Cup victory after the Sri Lanka batsman had gone off for bad light when the teams were told they would have to complete the final three overs or come back on Sunday to finish the match. The game, in fact, was already completed under ICC rules because Sri Lanka had batted the minimum 20 of their reduced allotted 36 overs and failed to reach their target.Crowe told a news conference the highly experienced umpiring team of himself, on-field referees Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar and the third and fourth umpires Rudi Koertzen and Billy Bowden would take collective responsibility for the error. “It's a human error,” he said. “It was a mistake,” said Crowe who indicated that Koertzen had first suggested the game could continue on Sunday.
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
Yes even a modified result based on 20 overs (D/L) would have had Aussies winning...
Umpires got it wrong...
I remember the look Ponting had on his face when Dar was shaking his fingers infront of him...
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
I wonder wht Aussi were gona do wth Eng if by any chance they qualified for final after seeing how they beaten SRI ![]()
Re: WC2007 Final: SL v AUS
It is sad that Australians and Sri Lankan had to go through it. First of all, Lankan blew the game. Fernando first dropped Gilchrist in 30s, than Sangakara dropped him again on 100. After that Murli gave two chances at second slip, which was not there.
Now to the game, Sri Lanka had to play in bad light. This is World Cup finale; give the team a chance to chase it down. Nobody could see what was going on there. More over, Crowe not knowing the law of Cricket is astonishing.
Australia played the brand of Cricket and I think it is poignant that they had to celebrate their third World Cup like that. I believe if Pakistan and India were there, we would be equally outrage.
Extremely thwarted World Cup, from murder of Bob Woolmer, which has to do with security at the sight to all round organization and preparation, which was anemic.

Well my "asterisk" point was made in reply to the "Jaywardene should have conceded" comment, which I think would still be true, regardless of the new information. However, that "20-over-is-an-official-match" revelation states that there was no need for Aleem Dar to force the teams to continue on, which changes my initial impression regarding him doing a good job under the situation just a bit. He should have already known that and spared us the 3 overs of farcical cricket. Although the real blame goes to match referees and the guys in the stands, as they were the ones who were relaying the information onto the pitch umpires.

Triumphant Aussies arrive back home
Australia’s World Cup-winning cricket team arrived back in Sydney this morning.
Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs in the World Cup final in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Sunday morning to clinch their third-straight title.
The squad arrived on an early morning flight to be greeted by family, officials and the media.
Captain Ricky Ponting and vice-captain Adam Gilchrist strode into the arrivals hall clutching the World Cup trophy.
Ponting said winning the tournament was one of the proudest achievements he had been involved in while a member of the Australian squad.
“It’s been very special, it’s been an amazing couple of months of our lives and probably an even more amazing last three or four days,” he said.
Ponting said the magnitude of Australia’s victory in the Caribbean could not be ignored.
“To once again go through it undefeated and probably once again have a lot of our players peaking at the right time of the World Cup is an amazing achievement by everybody,” he said.
Ponting said winning the tournament for the third consecutive time was a special achievement.
“That sort of stuff doesn’t happen in anybody’s career. And there’s me, Gilly and Glenn (McGrath) that have been lucky enough for that to happen,” he said.
“So we made the most of the celebrations and have probably got one more afternoon in us I think today.”
Ponting said Australia’s lengthy celebrations following the victory over Sri Lanka were justified.
“We celebrated as we should,” he said.
“I’ve played in four World Cups now and I’ve been lucky enough to play in four finals and three of those, the last three of those, have been winning. That sort of stuff doesn’t happen in anybody’s careers.”
Gilchrist, who scored a match-winning 149 in the World Cup final, said the significance of his performance was only just starting to sink in.
“That was definitely one of the most fulfilling days of my cricketing career,” he said.
"Purely from a selfish or individual perspective it was really pleasing to finally pass the three-figure mark in a World Cup game. I would imagine I’ve played about 31 or 32 World Cup innings and I’m not a selector but I wouldn’t be picking too many players as a selector if they were the results.
“But to get it on the occasion, it was was a huge thrill.”
The Australian squad will attend a sponsors breakfast at the SCG this morning, before being given a public reception in Sydney’s Martin Place this afternoon.
It will be the last official function for the retiring McGrath and departing coach John Buchanan.
Buchanan, who joined the Australian squad in 1999, said he had enjoyed an ideal farewell.
“I think hopefully the most pleasing thing is to leave the team and we’re all friends,” he said.
“To me that’s pretty special. My time’s finished, that’s it. I’ve been around international cricket for nearly eight years so it’s time for fresh ideas and fresh faces.”
