WC'06 - fantasy league - suggestions and input needed

People,

as we all know the World Cup is only 2 and a half months away now. Just over a month from now the countries have to submit their teams. It will be nice if we could have a fantasy league like we had one for Euro 2004.

however, we have to keep in mind that there will be twice as many teams and many more matches to be played.

So, therefore I wanted to have a format on how to play this fantasy league.

I’m posting the rules from the Euro 2004 fantasy league here, and this will be taken as template for the WC. But I need your suggestions and input on how to improve on this.

I have made a preliminary set-up for a fantasy league for the upcoming euro 2004 championship. Feedback is welcome and we can adapt the system accordingly.

There are two ways you can get points: via your match predictions and via your team.

First, the matches:

for each match, all participants will make a prediction of the result for each team involved in the tie. Points are awarded based on the actual scoreline. If you have the goals right by one team you will get 10 points; if you are 1 goal away you will get 3 points. 2 or more goals adrift is 0 points. This is done for both teams in the tie.

example: France - England.
my prediction 3-1
actualy scoreline 2- 1

here i will get 3 points because i was one goal away for france + 10 points because i was spot-on with respect to the goals scored for england. i will receive total 13 points for the tie

if my prediction was 0 - 0, i would have only gotten 3 points (1 goal adrift in the england score = 3. more than 2 goals adrift for the french score = 0).

These predictions will be made for all matches in the first round. After the first round, we will submit again the score lines for the known quarter final matches, and again for the semi-final and final.

Second, the teams:

goal scored by ur player: 15 points

penalty during shoot-out: 10 points

own goal: - 10 points

penalty save during match: 30 points (this includes penalties that miss the target)

penalty save during shoot-out: 20 points (this includes penalties that miss the target)

yellow card: - 5 points

red card (at once): - 20 points

if we have this, we will have plus or minus points for strikers, midfielder, defenders AND goalkeepers.

selection criteria

at least 1 goalkeeper

at least 4 defenders, of which maximum two full-backs

at least 1 defensive midfielder

maximum 5 strikers

maximum 4 players from one side, but at least 6 nationalities shud be in ur team

Let me know of any suggestions/advice/tips etc etc.

I think I understand. I really want to play. When will I have to submit my team? I can choose any players from any team yes? Whats the maximum/minimum number of players I can have from a certain team? As in I couldnt have all the Italian or French players, so how many could I have each?

I have more questions but I cant type them all out now. But I really want to play too!!

Nessie, I will think about it, but so far nothing has jumped out that will warrant any massive redesign. good job.

ok people, I hope to be finalizing the format soon. I only have one addition:

in order to make sure that people don't select as defenders players who are on the bench so that they cannot get carded, every player gets one point for each start during the tournament.

furthermore, since there are sooo many matches and groups, it would be nice if I could get 1 or 2 persons volunteering to keep the statistics of 2-4 groups, and I will take up the remaining groups.

Nes, do you think we are better off with a website? just like we use in fantasy cricket? or its too complicated for a website? We shall ask decent about the possibility.

^hmmm, that is a possibility, but I'm not much into website creating etc.

Last time, I used a simple Excel spreadsheet and it worked fine.

It is also important to have an idea on how many people want to participate. Last time there were about 20.

this time, I know of about 10 at least who have shown interest. Probably it will get more. If there are let's say 50+ participants, then it can get tough, but below that it should be manageable

^ I am not asking YOU to create a website. I will ask decent about the possibility. Because a website creates a lot more interest than manual updation ( as evident from record number of participants in fantasy cricket site) and it wont do any harm to explore the possibility.

Regarding number of participants, I am quite sure that as worldcup comes closer, interest will develop.

saby, go ahead and ask decent if he wants to help out :–) I’ll finalize the format once the squads are announced. (May 15th). So let’s say next week Monday, Ill have the final scoring format and decent can start incorporating it on the site

^ Picking 20 players out of such a big pool is going to be really difficult.

^yeah, I know. during Euro2004 it was 15 players. So I've increased it to 20, more than that will be perhaps too much to keep track

I think this is gonna be a lot harder than last time. I don’t even know who half those people are.

Anyway I know you haven’t sorted anything out properly but I was just wondering on a rough date for the deadline for submitting teams? Thanks.

I always watch world cup, but then off for next four years, i wud love to play but i know so little about the players.
