**Tendulkar reaches World Cup landmark **](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)
Sachin Tendulkar set a new record for the most runs in a single World Cup when he reached his half-century against Sri Lanka.
He went from 46 to 50 after smashing Dilhara Fernando to the midwicket fence where it was misfielded by Prabath Nissanka, resulting in a boundary.
The four took Tendulkar’s aggregate score in this competition to 524, the highest made by any batsman in eight previous World Cup tournaments.
Tendulkar held the previous record for the highest World Cup tournament aggregate of 523, made in 1996.
His closest rival is former Australian opener Mark Waugh, who made 484 runs, also in 1996.
Tendulkar reached his half century against Sri Lanka off 60 balls with India on 99, and after 19 overs they had raced to 104 without loss.
He was well supported by Virender Sehwag, who was unbeaten on 34 when lights in the grandstand caused a 10-minute delay in Johannesburg.
Already the leading run-scorer in the competition with 474 runs prior to this Super Sixes match, Tendulkar launched a fierce assault on Sri Lanka’s attack after India had surprisingly been put into bat.
He demonstrated the full range of his strokeplay, taking a particular liking to Nissanka after he had been recalled to Sri Lanka’s line-up in preference to Pulasthi Gunarantne.
Nissanka was hammered for 33 runs during his opening four-over spell, which was also littered with wides and no-balls, with Tendulkar hitting him for three boundaries in one over.
With Chaminda Vaas unable to find the control he has exerted in previous matches, Tendulkar and Sehwag were able to bring up their half-century partnership off only 49 balls.
Even Sehwag, who has attracted plenty of criticism in India for his failure to score a single half-century in his seven World Cup innings, looked back to his normal self.
