Re: WC 1996 - Last Match - Gr8 Reception for J.Miandad

I was there at the NSK..and I was sitting at the Media Box---where the commentator specifically said that in his 20 years of many matches etc., he has never seen or heard of the reception JM received when he came out to bat for the last time at the NSK and of his career....of Int.Cricket.

It was JAVED..JAVED...JAVED that the NSK was sounding with a roar......with a complete mesmerizing situation all around.

I can never forget that scene and standing ovation on JM.

And you can watch some of that reception here…

Not to mention one of my favourite commentators, Iftikhar Ahmed with his enchanting voice (although his “uppish rubbish” sometimes got a bit excessive!!)…He was one of the main reasons why people like myself started following cricket in Pakistan back in the mid-80s. He glamorised cricket commentary in much the same way as Imran, Miandad, Zaheer Abbas etc. glamorised the sport in Pakistan in the eighties

And quite fittingly Miandad in his farewell innings in Pakistan with Inzamam at the other end

Re: WC 1996 - Last Match - Gr8 Reception for J.Miandad

This was the 2nd maatch involving Pakistan against England at Karachi during WC-96.

There's an interesting happening which took place during the one earlier to this one--between Pak v/s South Africa under Hnasie Cronje and I played a role there.

Right before the match--I was called by Arif Ali Abbasi at his NSK office to put sense in JM to PLAY as he had backed out due to 'back ache" which was not the case!

Actually JM was pushed from the fact that WA had listed him 4th down and Inzy had refused for an alteration on his 2nd down position. That was a clear sign of Wasim's connivance against JM.

I spoke to JM who said "Raju Bhai Aap Doorre Rahein Iss Cheez Se....Mein Aap ko Sharminda Nahin Karna Chahta...please....Mein Aap Ki Bohat Respect Karta Houn" and I backed out quietly...till there was a call received from Islamabad that JM must play....it was Naseerullah Babar's possibily at the behest of AAZ...but that didn't work out even.

**Finally, we talked JM into making an announcement on mike that he was genuinely in pain and can't play.....and the NSK jampacked crowd was going wild..and it was feared that some serious hungama would occur in shape of cvil commotion...which didn' happen after JM's address. **

That match also saw the Government announcing Rs.0.6 Million cash award to JM for being the only cricketer in the world then, to have played in all the six world cups...consecutively --- the record which still stands and is a far cry from being emulated or broken by anyone--I know of!

In case of records---SAEED ANWAR has had a close call a few times on his being broken or emulated...and so did JM recently...on TEST runs of a Pakistani player--while Afridi's century in 37 deliveries----is becoming dangerously close to be broken any season...now that we have teams like Scotland and Ireland in the run against Gargantuans. On Gibbs record of sixes...the gams have it that not Afridi but MISBAH may emulate it soon or may even go above---on some lucky chance of 6th delivery becoming wide oe no ball.

Khush rahein.....

Re: WC 1996 - Last Match - Gr8 Reception for J.Miandad

^ Yes Wasim Akram's attitude with Miandad is most disappointing considering it was Miandad who picked him for the away series against NZ at the age of 18 (cf. Imran who spotted Inzi and Waqar). Even in his biography Wasim Akram thanked Miandad for his debut test series but in the same sentence said something like they never really got on well with each other. If anything Miandad should have been the one to hold a grudge against Wasim Akram for leading a players' revolt in 1993 which led to him being unceremoniously sacked as captain despite Pakistan winning both test series post 1992 WC (in England 2-1 and the one-off test in NZ). I think the PCB over-reacted after the team's dismal performance in the B&H Cup because to be fair to JM Pakistan had not really done that well in the tri-series in Australia even under Imran. I think the first (and the only) time we actually won it was in 1996 under Wasim's leadership.
