exactly. you answered the question yourself.
if there are sex related problems, first, you need to try sorting it out through talk. through understanding what the other may need or wish for or dislike. Or if they're avoiding intimacy, you have to try finding the reason behind it and fix the problem. It could be something as simple as you having said something hurtful earlier in the day. If you so require, you can seek counseling/medical help. If there's still nothing left to be done to treat the problem in a civil manner, if worse comes to worst, like you said, you can get a divorce.
beating each other to pulp will not resolve anything. It's not gonna make sex wonderful later, unless you're into that sort of thing.
