Waugh axed as Australia's limited-overs captain

In an age of super-stars, this is the way to go.

From CricInfo

***Australia’s selectors have dropped a bombshell today, announcing the axing of national captain Steve Waugh from the country’s one-day international team.

Hohns stressed that the decision was made with a particular view to Australia’s defence of the World Cup in South Africa next year. He said that his panel had formed the unanimous view that there were now a number of players ahead of Waugh in the running for places in their best one-day combination.

Waugh, 36, stated that the decision represented a “setback and a challenge” and that he was determined to win his berth back.

“I’ve never shied away from a challenge; I’m a pretty determined sort of a person and I’ll do everything in my power to get back in that one-day side - my campaign starts from today.”

The side’s vice-captain, Adam Gilchrist, looms as the early favourite.

Thats right. Well he has been a bit arrogant recently. Lets not forget his commentsabout the injured South African player and his use of obsene words for the press. The press here in Australia has been after him. In the end he was the victim of the exact same scenario he created when he was being vocal for the removal of Mark Taylor
Plus Steve and Mark are just not giving the youngsters an opportunity to come up the ranks. Darren Lehmann is in his 30's and is joining the team now. The Australian team on average is one of the most budha (old) team. Nearly everyone is over 30 or nearing it

The Game Responds:

*The losses in one f'ing one day series does not justify this,it does not. The Australian selectors should just realize that if they start rebuilding the team at this time, there would be no chance in hell that they would win the World Cup next year(Which is good for us,since almost all of us,except some stupid shmucks, are supporters of the Pakistan team). This will just reduce the competition for us in the next world cup.

On the other hand, we might see the loss of a very,*very* dangerous one day batsman, which is a bad thing. Steve Waugh played arguably the best one day innings of all time in the last World Cup,and it would only hurt Australia's chances if they don't include him in the next World Cup.

The Game is expecting some fireworks from him in the test series against South Africa.Knowing Steve Waugh's nature,he will bounce back, mark The Game's words here. It's just a matter of when he will do that.People,That Is All.*

It's not how you play The Game,*shmucks,it's how The Game plays you.*

Even though I despise Steve Waugh and really hate the Australian team, this is not the way for anyone to be treated.

Steve Waugh a very talented player, with his captaining tactics, also with the bat, he was and would be very useful in the One Day's.

Is it his fault that he's a good player?

About that bald faggot Darren Lehmann, he's been given many chances in his career.
How can someone get three 1's in a row? Hehe only difference between him and Ajit Agarkar is that Agarkar got 3 ducks (or were there more).

Anyways, I don't like the fact he has been declined a spot on the team infact. If I were him, after Australia relize they did the wrong thing, never play for Australia again. And when Australia lose to South Afica in the World Cup, Australia have dropped the World Cup.

I don't think it'll be the same for him to get back on the team.

It is a suprise and about his attitude, I loved his attitude. His attitude is what a opposing captain should be in Cricket, not like a cup of tea ol' chap.
Cocky, stubborn, rude, proud, vulger.. ahhh the enthusiasm.

Oh well, maybe he will be back.

Though I really hate it when teams make captains the scape goats for a loss, without giving a valid cause.

It's happened to so many captains in the past, and is a cricket tradition that will carry on for generations to come.

I think the point here is that even if you are a mega star, your entry in the team is never assured. You have to earn a place by performing and if there are others who are performing better, then you'd be out. If you perform consistenly than you are in the team consistently. Simple.

Isn't that how it is supposed to be, anyway?

Past laurals alone won't get you too far in the selection process.

I never knew this sort of language was allowed here

Farishta trust me it isn’t allowed.

But, respecting Steve Waugh and seeing how some people are claiming Lehmann as a candidate for captaincy makes me laugh.

Btw.. I hate him because he won Yorkshire the County Championship over Surrey.

Welcome to reality :)
Its sad but its allowed. Takes the fun away from a sport discussion. Doesn't it?

As for Steve Waugh sad, very sad indead. Agreed that performance must always be the determining factor, but just one bad series, after so much doesn't justify his removal.

well indeed australians set standard very high .though my personal view is that steve should have stayed is captain.
if steve waugh would have been in my country india he would have been there for another decade

Steve waugh is still the best batsman Australia have got which he will prove at the next world cup. Thanks you Aussie dingbats, you've just increased Pakistan's chances of lifting the cup.

Well Peoples Champion. I have to say I'm disappointed by the use of foul language. Especially from someone who is a senior member like yerself.

I truly think he will be back...they are just trying to look at other possibilites before the world cup...but you never know those Australians.

GOOD LUCK TO ACB

I don't think anyone claimed Lehmann as candidate for captaincy. Someone merely mentioned that he was unable to get into Aussie team till he was 30.

In any case, Ponting has been announced as Aussie ODI captain. :)

No Pristine, reporters and analysts did put Lehmann in the list with the other three. So in that case it wasn't a rumour, though they didn't rate him that high.

So I guess Pontings the captain. I kinda wanted Adam Gilchrist as the captain. I respect Gilly much more. Oh well now we have two contenders to win the World Cup, Pakistan and South Africa, with New Zealand not far behind.

I think to write off Australia just because Steve Waugh has been dropped is carrying things too far. They must still be the favourites to win the cup.
