Water pressure in Karachi

السلام عليكم

I was buying a shower head from a store on Tariq Rd and the man asked me “pressure or no pressure?” I just said “no pressure” without thinking about it, got the thing and brought it home.

Afterwards, I was thinking, “wait a second, is there water pressure in pakistan?” So is there someplace in Pakistan with good water pressure and how does it work?

Are there areas of Karachi where the main line has enough pressure that people don’t need pumps, etc to get water into their home? Or is there some way that you can take the water in your tank and create your own pressure just for your home? Does anyone know about this?

Re: Water pressure in Karachi

i dunno about Pakistan but in India, the municipal water pressure is very low. so, to compensate that middle class people have put Tilloo pumps. it's everywhere like light bulbs...it sucks water from the municipal water main thus further reducing the water pressure for ordinary folks.

a lot of homes in every city there have their own mechanized water-well. each home owner digs a 6" water hole 40 feet deep [in our area] and put a water pump at the bottom. voila, they have full water supply 24/7/365. water is ONLY a switch away. you just have to flick it on.

however, the water table has continuously been depleted...it might go down 50 feet in a decade or so.

i think N believe it's almost the same situation in Pakistan.

as far as I know water pumps are used in all houses.

Re: Water pressure in Karachi

Dunno about Karachi, but whenever I go Lahore, water pressure is an issue. Be it I visit my relatives in Iqbal Town etc. Or even my own home in DHA. Whenever the electric motor is on, the pressure is a bit okay. When the water from the tank starts running out, pressure gets lower and lower to the point of literally dripping from the shower head.

Pressure used to be good before but now we use water pumps.

I did a google search and found some resources for homes in mexico where it seems they have the same problem of low municipal pressure: getting water pressure in home from cistern

Seems like some promising stuff, so no one has ever seen/heard of such a system in Pakistan? I guess it would need something like this: 1-1/2 Horsepower Whole House Water Pressure Booster Pump with Stainless Steel Housing on the outlet from the tank on the roof, and that little motor would automatically turn on and maintain water pressure.

I’ve definitely been in homes where there seems to be pretty good water pressure, much better than my house, but maybe they just have bigger tanks and automatic pumps to keep them near full all the time? And masjid’s wudhu areas usually have really good water pressure in spite of so much volume, wonder how they do that?
