I think we look for water as a criteria because life on Earth depends on water. Water also has some unique properties that allow for aquatic life to exist, such as the density of ice being lower than liquid water, the ability of water to dissolve a wide variety of substances, and water's high melting and boiling points.
There probably can be life that does not depend on water but I haven't studied biology extensively so perhaps someone else can answer that.
quite possible and you dont even have to be highly developed species for it.
we look for water on other planets because thats the only life supporting element we know of.
even our defination of life depends on our experience from this planet
Its because they see planets from an earthly perspective, and try to find out which planets may be suitable for humans to travel to. Granted all of them are millions of miles away, but eventually, travel could get fast enough to allow humans to fly off to such remote planets. Otherwise, I wouldnt be surprised if some kind of life form existed even on the sun.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but why do we assume that planets must have water for life to survive?
Could whatever kind of 'beings' that live there be so advanced that they don't need it lol or have something else they can use to survive instead?
Because if we didn't have water..we wouldn't have elctricity which comes from water. And most important source is cleaniess which we use water for. And finally we drink water in order to survive just so we don't get dehydrated.

Electricity doesn't come from water. water is used in the process simply because water can be turned to high pressure steam which is then used to spin turbines to create AC.
It's a good question, it's possible we look for water because water is a combination of two lighter elements, perhaps it could be another element or a combination of elements which can sustain life too but all these elements would have to be 'light' elements which are available from stars (as opposed to heavier elements which only come from super novas).
