WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

The Holy Qurán says:

“And Allah has created every animal from water…” (24:46)

“And He it is Who has created man from water…” (25:55)

“And We made from water every living thing.” (21:31)

As most of you would know, next to air, water is the element most necessary for survival. A normal adult is sixty to seventy percent water. We can go without food for almost two months, but without water only a few days. Yet most people have no idea how much water they should drink. In fact, many of us live in a state of dehydration.

A review of the body physiology highlights the profound importance of water in virtually all body functions. With less than optimal water intake waste products would accumulate in our body setting up a domino effect of a host of impaired body functions. When kidneys remove uric acid and urea, these must be dissolved in water. If there is not enough water, wastes are not removed as effectively, and may build up as kidney.

Water is also vital for chemical reactions, in digestion and metabolism. It carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells through the blood and helps to cool the body through perspiration. Water also lubricates our joints. Insufficient water in our system can impair every aspect of our physiology.

Drinking sufficient water can boost your energy, endurance, concentration and the number of calories you bum, plus beat back cold and a host of other ailments. You have antibodies in the mucus that coats your throat, which can help trap cold viruses. You can foil this ingenious defense even if you are minimally dehydrated because a lack of water dries out your mucus-producing tissues. If you are constipated, it may be because you are not drinking enough water, especially if you have had a lot of fiber, which will not do its job unless you have enough fluids in your system to flush things through. Your skin needs water to stay soft and supple. Water is good for drinking, swimming, washing, bathing, and essential for ablution.

Proper water intake is a key to weight loss. By not drinking enough water, many people incur excess body fat because the body cannot metabolize fats adequately.

Lack of water causes joint and muscle soreness and this impairs physical activity.

The minimum need for a healthy adult is about 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. You need more if you exercise a lot or live in a hot climate. Overweight people should drink an extra glass of water for every 25 pounds they exceed their ideal weight (this recommendation is not for people who are ill or those that require fluid restriction. They need to follow their physician’s advice.) The rule of thumb formula for daily water intake is half ounce per pound of body weight if you are not active and 2/3 ounce per pound if you are athletic.

Your fluid intake should be spread out evenly over the course of the day.

During times of fasting, it may be spread out during the permitted times of eating and drinking. Plain water is best. The Holy Prophet (peace be on him) was asked, “Which drink is most agreeable.” He answered, “Sweet cold water.” When the Holy Prophet (peace be on him) drank, he stopped twice to take a breath. He observed that this method quenches thirst helps to digest food, and is good for health Most forms of liquid count, including soup, fresh fruits and vegetable juices. Most are 75 percent water. Carbonated drinks make you feel fuller, so you will drink less. Alcohol and caffeine drinks like tea and coffee are diuretics and may contribute to dehydration .

Increasing your fluid intake will increase your frequency of going to the bathroom, initially. After a few weeks the body adjusts, the bladder adjusts and you urinate less frequently but in larger amounts.

Think about it. Think water. Water is life. “Allah has sent down water from the sky and has quickened therewith the earth after its death…” (Holy Qurán, 16:66). By consuming those eight glasses of water throughout the day, you could be on your way to a healthier, leaner body.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

Very interesting. I'll try to drink 8 glasses every day, though it's not as easy as it sounds, especially during the colder months.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

Now I'm thirsty! Thanks for the info!

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

THis is a modern day myth, there is no proven benefit of stuffing your stomach with water.

Proper water intake is a key to weight loss.

Not true
Lack of water causes joint and muscle soreness and this impairs physical activity.
Not true, xcan cause muscle soreness but not joint.

By the way a healthy person with access to water, drinking as he wishes never gets dehydrated.

Allah has given us a beautiful system in the body, which increases your urge to drink whenever your body needs it.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

^ As said above, the 8 glass a day is a myth, drinking merely when youre thirsty is good enough...

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

6 Sunnahs and Etiquettes of Drinking Water

1) Drink water while sitting down
2) Examine (look to see if the water is ok) the water before drinking
3) Drink with the right hand
4) recite Bismillah before drinking
5) drink in 3 breaths, in first breath take 1 sip, take away the glass from your mouth then take another sip and remove the glass from mouth again, and in the third time you can drink as much as you want.
6) say Alhamdulilah when you are done.

Absolutely.

Dehydration along with mineral loss (mostly potassium) causes muscle soreness.

yeah thats right...i had tough time drinking two glasses...but Inshallah I ll try to drink more.

Look for joint keyword in following link:

Dehydration

I am not denying that person would stay healthy if he/she dont drink 8 glasses of water daily...i drink about 3 and i do consider my self healthy...however if you look at this biologically the you ll realise that water intake work as flushing system. The more you intake the more rubbish you flush out...and this is absolutly not a myth in western countries...you can visit any doctor and they will always tell you to drink more fluid...at least in UK its a common practice that they never prescribe you antibiotic and tell you to drink more fluid...and as I gave references from Quran and Hadith which fluid could be better then water.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

Its proven in Ayurveda that water intake can reduce cholestrol reduction.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

^That can only be proven in Aryuveda.

On the contrary water does not work as "flush". meaning that more you drink, the more waste products will be removed. Rather the removal of wastes remains the same as long as you are producing 500 ml of urine, the minimum required for waste excretion.

The kidneys do a dual job, they conserve water when body is in short supply, while they excrete water when you over drink it. And when you drink excessively you make the job of kidneys difficult, bcoz now kidneys have to excrete "water" while holding on to essential electrolytes. Excessive driniking over long periods can lead to inability of kidney to concentrate urine, which means that when you really need your kidneys to hold on to water, like in case of dehydration, bleeding, shock, they wopn't be able to do so.

The myth of 8 glasses does not come from Quran or Hadith, its someone's wild guess with no scientific basis.

Firstly 8 glasses of water is not excessive. Secondly saying whole medical world is wrong when they prescibe patients to drink more fluid or an average figure of 8 glasses then this is your personal opinion...

Nonetheless you have raised few points which require further research and I will try to seek advice and knowledge regarding the points you raised...inshallah

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

^The medical world has never said that, thats what i am trying to say.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

lolz....Icon...would you mind telling me which country you live in...so I can perhaps reply you accordingly....I may be wrong I am not saying I am 100% right...I read the article and felt this is worth sharing and had some personal experience of this as well.

Re: WATER— Are We Drinking Enough?

^Thats okay dear to share an article, and i felt that i should share that this is a myth. What does country of residence got to do with a purely scientific discussion, or do you feel that i am unable to understand science.

well no not at all....one should never doubt anyone's abilities as you are doubting Allah's creation...I only asked as may be country you live in may have some different approach to this method.

Water is very good for health and one of the pure drink.
