Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not used.

Please share your tips on ways to utilize things that would otherwise go to waste food and otherwise:

Let me start:

  1. I have been regularly donating clothing that no longer fits to charity or pass it on to family members

  2. Stale bread - I grind into bread crumbs or use it in Kababs (soaked in milk)

  3. used lemons - I toss them in water and gives off a frequent aroma

  4. Yes I regift - and I am not ashamed of doing so. I guess I learned from my mom. Desi people love to regift.

Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not used.

Don’t worry. These days every single wedding I have invited to says NO BOXED GIFTS! which means cash or jewelry only.

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

really? does that mean cash or jewelry? how about men? are they more generous? lol

Probably cash/check/giftcards to be more accurate. Gold jewelry is very very expensive. It’s better off to give a monetary gift. So don’t worry just make sure to mention that on your Shaadi card- SORRY NO BOXED GIFTS PLEASE so you don’t get any regift crystal china dishes.

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

good advice! … if i ever get married, i’ll send you the invitation card with those golden words! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hmm I always thought that meant you could give gifts in a brown paper bag

I have to say I thought the thread was going to be a bit more imaginative. Got quite a shock seeing not throwing away clothes… as if throwing them away is an otherwise normal thing

The 3 Rs ( no I am not refferring to reading, riting rithmetic)

Reduce
Reuse
Recycle

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

I have given away desi clothes and stuff, the only ones I’ve “thrown” away were if they were ripped and there was no way to salvage it or just in really ick condition that you couldn’t donate.
Even a few ripped outfits, depending on the tear, I would give it to someone who was much thinner and they could alter it to fit themselves…

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

You still don’t need to throw them away. Not sure what the process is in NA but here we have textile recycling banks where completely unusable textiles are recycled.

Small nutella jars make great tumbler glasses. My mum started doing it because (a) my bro’s ate a lot of nutella (b) they were always breaking her glasses.

Please make it a great thread…post ideas that others may not think of

Unfortunately alot of ppl still throw out perfectly good clothes. It’s not socially or islamically acceptable.

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

Pretty much all the spice jars (glass) that I have are recycled pasta sauce or salsa jars collected over time.

stoppit - those are nice looking tumblers! Nutella in USA comes in plastic containers.

Those make very nice glasses. Shear is right they come plastic here in NA.

I too use the pasta sauce jars for spices.

Of course I reuse gift bags and boxes over and over. I don’t write on them so they can be reused over and over until the bag rips. I sometimes can salvage wrapping paper and reuse it again.

**cool whips and bigger yogurt, sour cream containers can be reused for storage. Danish butter cookie tins are great for storing stuff.

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

reuse grocery bags as trash bags for my bin in the restroom. Its not creative.. but it works.
reuse mailing boxes and envelopes and other packing materials.
sell my old books on ebay.
add patches to torn clothing/destroyed jeans for modesty.
use up items that are about to expire like milk and fruits for smoothies.
left over qeema to make cutles/tikki

Re: Waste Not - Ways to utilize things that would otherwise be thrown away or not use

Good to know I’m not the only one who washes and re uses Ziploc bags! (the ones used for meat, I do throw away). !

Also use the grocery bags for lining small trash cans in the bathroom (Target bags are the just the right size).!

Wash/re use the foil trays. The really icky ones, I do throw away.

Magazines..I have over 30 subs, so all my old mags are donated to my childrens elementary school. The teachers love, love , love receiving the mags. Been doing this for 5 years now.

Desi clothes.. Donate to a Islamic organisation that we have here. Also have a list of folks who want EUC clothes and will give to them.

Abayas/scarves… Donated specifically to Muslim sisters in need, and new Muslims sisters . A third party collects them, and distributes to those who express interest.

Newspapers..go to recycling bin at elementary school. Also used for cleaning mirrors etc.

Yogurt containers..wash and usually send food to others in these containers.

I use newspaper to wrap veggies…like coriander and mint. It keeps them fresh longer…line compartments in fridge with newspaper…

-garage/yard sales are popular in neighborhoods where you have to pay to dispose of trash.

I toss leftover veggies or ones that might spoil if not used in soups.
