KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram on Wednesday expressed his willingness to serve as bowling coach for Pakistani cricket team if he is offered by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
“I am willing to render my services to Pakistani team as bowling coach if I am offered to do so and definitely to be as bowling coach for Pakistani team will be my priority,” Wasim said while talking to newsmen at the Sindh High Court.
Wasim said keeping in view trend of cricket, rendering services of bowling coach is inevitable for international cricket teams observing that this exercise is successfully being made in many teams.
Legendary Pakistani pace bowler, who claimed record 502 wickets in limited-overs cricket and 414 wickets in Test cricket, retired from international cricket after debacle of Pakistani team in 2003 Cricket World Cup.
Commenting on bowling performance of Pakistani team in recently Pakistan-India series, he said performance of bowlers during the whole series was not impressive, however, he did not point out any specific bowler for bad performance. Wasim said bowlers should concentrate on their performance rather than making huge claims.
About performance of Indian team, Wasim was of the view that they played well despite facing pressure as touring team. “I know the pressure which the touring team face as I was the member of Pakistani team which visited India and defeated them on their home ground,” Wasim said.
I like the guy. I know there are many people (incl on this forum) who are suspicious about Akram due to his betting history... but he is a top class bowler and is willing to coach. PCB should grab the opportunity.
PCB should also try to tap Waqar Younis... may be make him the bowling coach of Pak's junior team to groom younger talent. Both of them are bowlers par excellence and can again work in tandem to get us great fast bowlers for our national team in the future.
If PCB ignores him this time, then he should NOT be ridiculed for serving some other country's bowlers. Period. The guy has to make a living too, you know.
Agreed. On one hand there are people who will NOT want him to be associated in any way with Pakistan cricket. Then there are people (sometimes same people ) who will blast him for coaching other teams (read: India).
Given a choice between wasim and waqar, i'd go with waqar, bearing in mind how he changed shoaib's career during the tour of SA, a couple of years back. He maybe a poor captain, but when it comes to swing bowling, there could be no better teacher.
Having said that, its unfortunate to see that most new bowlers (shabir, gul, rao) are front arm bowlers, and thus are capable of doing more damage with seam than with swing. We have to have a combo of swing and seam (like we did with the 2 W's) from both ends, otherwise its a lost cause.

Materialize what? Its just Wasim said that he is willing to serve, PCB hasn't issued any statement saying that they'd like his services and will make any offer etc.
I heard that PCB is going to hire Waqar for 2 year bowling assignment for the senior team. Shereyar asked Waqar to retire gracefully during India tour so he can make him bowling coach. Waqar also get along with dheets like Miandad and Inzi very well.
Wasim is different breed. But his MBA of players on the field during his captaincy shows that he can dandafied our youngsters and Bas&$# like Shoaib. He will be a sucessful coach only if we give him full authority. Miandad and Wasim cannot work together.

Maybe you guys didnt notice..Under his captaincy Razzaq,Azhar,Saqlain and to some extent shoaib excelled in bowling..ab in bolwers ko dekho..sab kay sab phudduuu..Well maybe it could be his leadership qualities that brought the best out of every bowler
So do you guys think Waqar can be more effective than Wasim in coaching simply because of being a right arm fast bowler?
I can see Wasim making a major difference in indian bowling dept than ours..Left armers can relate more to Wasim.
Wasim and Waqar always competed each other for supremacy and to me now it seems they are fighting for the coaching job!it will be a shame if we don't utilize any of them.
