Wasim, Waqar launch Pakistan tour in style

Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram took three wickets with his first seven balls as the British Universities struggled to 74 all out on the first day of the opening tour match at Trent Bridge.

The left-armer produced an unplayable early burst, finding movement through the air and off the seam in overcast conditions on his way to figures of 4 for 13.

Wasim’s fourth delivery bowled Michael Brown before his fifth trapped Matt Banes leg before. Though James Pyemont fended off the hat-trick delivery, the former Lancashire man dismissed Will Jefferson with the first ball of his next over, at which point he had not conceded a run.

Wasim claimed a fourth victim inside the hour before Mohammad Sami got in on the act by having Middlesex’s Jamie Dalrymple caught in the slips.

Captain Waqar Younis soon found his line as well to claim three wickets, including Pyemont, who with 18 was the only batsman to offer any sustained resistance.

From CricInfo:

"Mushtaq Ahmed pushed his claims for a place in the Pakistan Test side with a marvellous spell of spin bowling to help the tourists to a comfortable innings and 87-run win over the British Universities at Trent Bridge.

Beginning their second innings 242 runs behind Will Jefferson and Michael Brown put on 51 for the first wicket but once Mushtaq was introduced from the Radcliffe Road End batting was made to look increasingly complex.

A spell of 24 overs, broken only by the tea interval, brought him the impressive figures of 8/49 and match figures of 10/51.

Pakistan coach Richard Pybus said: "Mushtaq has done his confidence the world of good.

"It is quite a big thing to ask these players who have been involved mainly in one-day matches in Pakistan domestic cricket recently to come out here and get straight back into the demands of the longer game.

“But he has done it. His confidence will be up, and it makes for good competition with the other spinners.”

With four victims before tea Mushtaq picked up a fifth with the first ball after the resumption, trapping Jamie Dalryrmple lbw. Porter fell in the same way not playing a shot, Ferley was taken at bat/pad and Foster sliced to cover."

I hope he bowls like that in the tests!
