CHENNAI: Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram’s wife is in a critical condition at a hospital here where she was rushed on Tuesday after

developing an “emergency situation” in an air ambulance during its scheduled refuelling at the Chennai airport.

Huma was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals here on advice from doctors on board the Singapore-bound air ambulance, hospital and airport sources said.

“She is receiving necessary intensive medical attention,” the hospital said in a statement.

Hospital sources said Huma suffered a multiple organ failure and she was put on ventilator support.

Her pulse rate was picking up and vital parameters were better, but her condition continued to be critical, the sources said.

She was originally scheduled to receive treatment in Singapore.

Earlier, airport officials had said that the flight made an unscheduled landing on a request from the pilot.

Former cricketer Ravi Shastri, here to attend the wedding of the son of National Selection Committee Chairman K Srikkant, rushed to the hospital soon after hearing the news about Huma.

Shastri, a TV co-commentator with Akram, spent nearly two hours with him and his family at the hospital, sources added.

Do they have any children ? I don't seem to recall anything in the media about their children.

I pray for a miraculous recovery for Huma.

I remember watching an interview of her and Wasim on the Simi Grewal Show a few years ago. She seemed a very graceful lady.

Yes, they have two sons that I know of. Just a few days ago, she was on TV with Wasim (someone here posted a link in one of the threads). Whatever illness she has, it seems to have struck suddenly, otherwise Wasim would not have been in South Africa recently for the Champions Trophy. She was on an air-ambulance on the way to Singapore to be treated. The article says her organs started shutting down, which indicates a severe reaction to something, an infection, or something to do with kidneys.

Chennai: Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram’s wife was Tuesday admitted to Chennai’s Apollo Hospital after her condition worsened midway through her flight to Singapore, forcing the air ambulance to make an emergency landing in the city.

**Huma was being flown from Lahore to Singapore for neurosurgery to remove three tumours from her brain. **

As the air ambulance was flying over India her condition worsened and the doctor accompanying the patient wanted her admitted in an emergency ward at the earliest since reaching Singapore would have taken another four hours.

The pilot immediately contacted the Chennai air traffic control at 4pm and his request was relayed to the civil aviation authorities in Delhi since it was a Pakistani aircraft.

When the civil aviation and external affairs officers learnt about the identity of the patient and her condition they cleared the aircraft for emergency landing and also issued temporary visas to all eight persons aboard.

The foreign office also asked the airport authorities to provide the necessary assistance in reaching the patient to a hospital without further delay.

The plane landed at the Chennai airport at 4.20pm and a waiting Indian Airlines ambulance transported the patient to the hospital in central Chennai.
Huma was put on an emergency support system in the hospital, but the doctors said her condition continued to be critical.

Huma is accompanied by husband Wasim, her brother, a doctor, a nurse and an attendant.

The aircraft crew consists of the pilot and a co-pilot.

yesterday i heard on some news channel that she was affected by some bacteria(in food) which caused organs failure and swelled her body up.This weird thing happens to one in a million or so.... huma's body apparently could not fight that bacteria off....dont know what kind of bacteria it was but that is what i heard yesterday...

this is very sad... something either happened suddenly or was just diagnosed... what ever it is.. I pray for her full recovery.... she and the family must be in deep pain... as the whole nation is at the moment..
May ALLAH have mercy on her and rest of the nation and ummah..

Ya, that news remind me of meeting her few times in then called ANZ-Grindlays bank- clifton branch, karachi where I started my career around 10 years back. Earlier called "Huma Mufti", a beautiful lady with a graceful personality.
May she get her health recovered very soon.
