KARACHI: Pakistani cricket legend Wasim Akram on Thursday said that players heading for the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand should sweat it out at a boot camp to boost their chances of victory.

Pakistan are in Group B of the World Cup alongside arch-rivals India, South Africa, the West Indies, Ireland, United Arab Emirates and Zimbabwe.

They open their campaign against India at Adelaide on February 15.
To prepare for the challenges ahead, Wasim suggested a boot camp.

“Since Pakistan have no cricket until October (against Australia in the United Arab Emirates) they must hold a boot camp on hilly areas just like Australia do when they go into an Ashes series,” Wasim told AFP.

The former skipper said that the country’s cricket administrators need to concentrate on improving fielding and fitness.

“For me the only worry is the 2015 World Cup will be totally different as grounds in Australia and New Zealand require great expertise and good preparation,” Wasim told AFP.

Declared player of the tournament for his 18 wickets in Pakistan’s World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand in 1992, Wasim said it would be best to go to Australia early.

“I remember we went to Australia three weeks before the event and it helped us a lot,” said Wasim.

“The grounds in Australia need adapting to because if you are not used to them you tend to injure yourself.”

Wasim said that the Pakistani team also needs to improve their fielding.

“When I am away I always ask experts to help Pakistan and recently I talked to Jonty Rhodes who is ready to help Pakistani players in fielding for a short period,” said Wasim of the South African, regarded as one of the best fielders of his time.

**Wasim also added that Pakistan should forget the panic over their World Twenty20 flop in Bangladesh recently.

“Australia and England also lost in the Super-10 stages but there was no panic like here in Pakistan. We took it to our hearts and the captain had to step down,” said Wasim, referring to Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez’s resignation.

I agree with him, we are very emotional in any case either it loss or win!

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Looking at your avatar and the word emotional.

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Make Wasim the bowling coach

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Re boot

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Yaaas, laess of biryani, moar of sabzi

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

I agree. Woh kiya kehtay hain, latoon kay bhoot, boot campon say he mantay hain.

It will hone some skills, at least for those that are less experienced. And landing early in Australia should also help. If everything clicks, Pakistan has a chance to progress through this tournament. Should be a cracker of a world cup, either way. Can’t wait.

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

I agree, but only with the 'boot' bit, inn sab ko boot parne chahiyen esp. for their frequent shocking brainless displays with the bat these days (like 4 people getting stumped v Windies)

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Unless Pak do something about their atrocious batting, esp. their seeming inability to chase any decent total, I think

India and South Africa will qualify for the semis from this group (Windies not that good in ODIs or Tests these days)
Australia and Lanka from the other group (I say that even though I believe that NZ will be very formidable at home, like in 1992)

Both India and Australia are strong favourites imo >> Lanka

You heard it first here

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Yes, that is what I meant exactly. :hypo: At least, this will be real cricket (or real cricket when compared to the hustle and bustle of Twenty20). One Day Tournaments always have that special feeling, the gravity. It should help with performance. This last World T20 was just a whirlwind.

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

India that too in Australia NEVER a threat

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

May I remind you that under IK and with Miandad and Wasim in the side,we could not beat India in 1992. Bowlers did their job by restricting India to 216 but we could not even chase that (all out for 173!)
And India's present batting is much stronger than the 1992 team.
Aik group game tau abhi sey nikal do, vs India. it is a foregone conclusion (barring a mishap!)
Against SA our chances are roughly 40%
Against West Indies 50-50
The rest of the games should not count but with Pak batting you never know.

Wasim Akram suggests boot for laaton ke bhoot!

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

Didnt you also say that Aus will hammer us in T/20 match. Also remember the match will be at perth and we have some serious pace to help us.

Re: Wasim Akram suggests boot camp for Pakistan team

^ Adelaide Oval

Only two Aussie batsmen clicked (in the T20 game) and they still managed to give us a real scare (despite target being 192)!

The way Pakistan bat, we will never be consistent in any format. Pak might spring a surprise in the group games (because we are unpredictable) but to win a world cup you have to play esp. bat consistently well which is a big ask with our current batting which is even more fragile than the 1992 outfit.
Our current pace bowling (infact overall bowling) is over-rated. Junaid is not even half as good as Wasim (even he struggled in 1992 and Aaqib was the better bowler in the earlier games) Irfan is very injury prone and may not be fit enough to play all the important games. The rest of the pacers including Gul are pretty average.

IK ki cornered tiger speech ney jadoo kar diya warna they hardly looked like a world-cup winning team in the earlier games.

I know honey ko tau kuch bhi ho sakta hai. Even Zimbabwe can beat Pakistan
