Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan

June 05, 2006 16:14 IST

Former Pakistan captain and fast bowling legend Wasim Akram has taken India coach Greg Chappell to task for dropping Irfan Pathan for the first Test against the West Indies on the pretext that his confidence is low.

“I don’t know why Pathan has been dropped. Coach Greg Chappell has said his confidence is low. But when a player’s confidence is low he should be played and not dropped. He is one of the experienced bowlers. There was need to play him and not drop him to save him,” Akram said.

The former Pakistan captain is also not impressed by the constant changes in composition and strategies of the Indian side and said such experiments cannot go on forever.

“You can experiment for four-six months but you can’t experiment all the time. Every player needs confidence and I am saying this from experience. You get confidence when the captain and coach back you and not when the coach goes out and tells everyone that the player’s confidence is low,” said the former left-arm bowler, who took 414 wickets in 104 Tests, in Mumbai on Sunday.

Akram, who was in Mumbai at a function organised by Roche Diagnostics India Pvt Ltd., pointed out that every player goes through a bad patch in his career.

“Everyone goes through a bad patch in his career. I have gone through it. Kapil Dev and Imran Khan have gone through it too. I think you must play him [Pathan]. If he is not injured and he has been dropped then it is wrong,” he said.

Pathan had been left out of the first Test at St. John’s Antigua, along with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, following a string of listless displays in the one-day series.

Akram, however, did not agree that Pathan’s batting is affecting his bowling.

“Batting never affects the bowler. You just have to go out there and enjoy doing it. I hope Irfan also does the same when batting. He has to believe in himself and work hard.”

He was also surprised over the omission of Ajit Agarkar, India’s best pacer in the one-day series, for the four-match Test rubber.

“As a captain if I had a bowler who had done well in one-dayers and has experience I will pick him and not a bowler who’s not played before [V R V Singh], especially when the morale of the team is down. I don’t know who is suggesting all this, but Rahul Dravid should stand up and back his players,” Akram said.

At the same time, the former left-arm pacer said people should have patience when youngsters are inducted into the squad.

“It will take a while for the youngsters in the team to settle down. Every youngster takes around a year to settle down. Ups and downs will be there. The team needs to be patient and back the youngsters,” he explained.

Akram admitted that the 4-1 one-day series victory for the West Indies had come as a surprise for him, saying he had expected India to defeat the hosts after their comprehensive victory over England at home.

He also rubbished claims that Sachin Tendulkar would not bat at his best again.

“You have to understand Tendulkar is not young, he is 33. Everyone goes through injuries and an injury like shoulder injury takes time to heal. He just needs time and support,” he said.

On being asked which Indian batsmen he found the most difficult to bowl at, he declared: “Sunil Gavaskar.”

Was Irfan dropped because of low confidence or on a personal request from playing too much cricket?

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

i havent read the article, but seriously Akram ko kya takleef hai? Its like if Kapil Dev slammed Bob for dropping Shoaib Actor.

He can't be talking about Eng vs SL series there , right? :)

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Akram ko lakshmi milti hai so basically one can make him do anything as long as lakshmi is coming.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Everytime a cricket celebrity like Akram opens his mouth commenting on Indian cricket team, gets a handsome paycheck from the paper or TV channel he is talking to. Remember Shahid Afidi refused to talk to media in recently played series against England. Inzi told guys its time to cash their fame out.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Wait for Chappell reply. I wonder what Akram would say if Chappell replies "go take care of your country first"

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Very well Said Waseem Akram. I agree with each and every sentence.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Why doesn't Wasim Akram move to India with his family and become a sikh?

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Si

You read my mind!

Seems as if whenever Akram, Imran or Miandad have come out in the open and spoke their minds, regardless whether their logic holds true and paints an accurate picture of the current scenario, every single time and in each such instance every single one of them have been openly thrashed and verbally abused, simply unnecessarily at times. Just because one's favorite team is on a winning roll and all the evils in the world are brushed under the carpet, such a mentality is that these same ex-cricketers should be locked up somewhere safe in a place where no available media is present, just so those illogical decisions in the dressing room and out in the field and the concept of chamcha-geeri system is maxed out to the extreme.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

I wouldnot say same about Javed and Imran. Many a time their views seems to be politically motivated. But Waseem usually comes out as very honest and candid with his remarks. Atlease when he talked about Indian cricket.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Si

Javed, I agree, has been pretty much against anything that has remotely resembled Pakistan in the past. Against the use of technology, against Woolmer, against Inzamam, and alongwith his other half Aamir Sohail, both of them have been known to criticize everything under the sun for a good measure. Alot of times both of them are the main by-product in the newspaper sales, and are simply there in the first place because of publicity stunts in the media. Rarely have they been known to make a positive statement, let alone acknowledge the deeds of their present counter-parts.

Imran and Wasim, on the other hand (even though political motivations have come into the picture) have stated and spoke their minds numerous times in the past and have been trashed just because the team was on a winning course, and what have you, everybody from here to the fourth corner of the world slapped them in the face for coming up with such heinous statements. Several editions of Straight Drive during a recent home series against India saw Imran Khan emphasize key points and nurture basic arguments into where they can be looked at as an extremely strong focal points.

And yes, Wasim is no different in this matter, either.

Akram is also the dada of Indian cricket now, since he signed up for hosting a show for them :) ... Let's not forget his tips to Irfan Pathan and the rest

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

There is too much emphasis in this thread about who said it and why, rather than the actual contents of his opinion. Just like we, an average cricket fan, have a right to express our opinion on anything we feel like, similarly former international cricketers also have similar right. That your words stay on Gupshup and his are reprinted in major news papers is because he has earned his right and his credentials. Now get rid of the jealous buwa syndrome, and focus on his comments.

How correct was it to drop Pathan from the first test? I just skim through the scorecards and some bulletins, but the decision to drop Pathan on the grounds that his confidence is low sounds more than absurd - its downright insulting. Arguably, Pathan is the best Indian fast bowler produced in recent times. To replace him with no-name potential fast bowlers is unforgivable. It would be perfectly fine to drop him if he were injured or if there was a better and more experienced fast bowler waiting in the wings.

I know many of you want to be on the fence on this issue because the test is still going on and you want to hedge your bets, but I'd say dropping Pathan on confidence grounds is wrong, even if India wins the test match.

Re: comments on Sachin, I don't know. There is a tendency to cut superstars like Sachin some slack and make all kinds of politically correct statements in his defense, but we'll see how he performs when he comes back from injury.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

wasim akram satay baaz is he even living in pakistan these days?..i think they should give him indian nationality for being so involved in indian cricket.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

Akram is trying his hardest to stay in the Indian psyche to keep getting jobs commentating and doing a few adverts here and there.

Re: Wasim Akram slams Chappell for dropping Pathan/Agarkar (Comments on Sachin/VRV Singh)

The other day he appeared in a commercial for Khujali(Itching) powder in Hindi with a bollywood hottie. I wonder his wife (Henna) is doing since he spends his days and night in India.
