Veteran Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has opted out of the two-Test series against South Africa starting later this month.
“Wasim has told the (team) manager about his unavailability and he in turn has informed the board about this situation. But no final decision has been taken on this issue,” Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Samiul Hasan told Reuters.
“He has not informed the Board directly as such. We have no plans at the moment to recall him after the one-day series in South Africa,” he added.
South Africa and Pakistan will play five one-day internationals starting on December 8 followed by Tests in Durban and Cape Town.
The 36-year-old Akram was named in both the one-day and Test squads for the tour of South Africa after he skipped the October Test series against Australia saying he wanted to concentrate on limited-overs matches and the World Cup.
“Wasim was picked for the Test squad only after he told the board he wanted to play the Tests. We don’t know what has prompted this change of heart,” the spokesman said.
Wasim has featured in just two of Pakistan’s last 11 Tests since August 2001 and went without a wicket in them. He remains Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in both forms of the game, with 414 Test and 486 one-day international wickets.
What in the world is going on with this guy. One minute he wants to play and the next minute he backs out.
What is his problem?
PCB should heavily fine Akram for not playing.

Yeah a right decision but he had to make this decision before the announcment of team (and thats like 15 days ago not much) is tarha kooi aur youngster polish ho jata.

Nakhray Wali and Jeray yaar aise batain kar ke rozay me aur bhook ligwa rahay ho, ama sahi nahi kar ryo, bohat zulm kar ryo, ama dekh kar bolo idhar tu sabhi log ata hai, ab tu meray pait nay bhi haar man le hai aur abhi aftari me ek ghanta baqi hai.
He shouldn't play test cricket anyway. I think he made the right decision. He should go one step further and announce retirement from Test cricket, so that people shouldn't expect him to play tests anymore. It is best for Pakistan if Waseem concentrates on ODI's and plays the central role in our victory in South Africa 2003! :~)
He is diabetic, and takes insulin injections. I admire him for continuing to play and perform consistently in ODI's even with such a disease. I tell you, years from now, when people look up his record and his performances, they will tell us that we were lucky to have seen him play. I will have no hesitation in ranking him in my all time great cricketers' list. He is simply amazing.
He is a great player but if he knew that he didn't want to play anymore test than why did he ask to be available for the test squad against South Africa. He probably have let some other fast bowler taken his place.

He was named by the Selectors, even though he had told them this: (its from your own first post)

Now I don't know if the reports are true but he himself said that he wanted to play test cricket, now why a sudden change in mind.
Saby, South Africa is place of fast bowlers, and I wouldn't be surprised if Waqar goes in with more fast bowlers than expected, he may even take out an extra batsman to make way for an extra speedster. And concerning how Shoaib is injury prone, than we will be left with M Zahid, and M Sami, both of them are young and they can get injured quite easily and that would put the selectors in big trouble.
Wasim knew that he doesn't want to play cricket than why in the world did he accept the offer from PCB, specially after the squad was announced.
I have nothing against Wasim, as he is my favorite cricketer of all time but sometimes his actions dissappoints me.
PS- According to ICC, when a team is announced, then no changes can be made, for example, another player can not be called from Pakistan in case someone pulls out unless that player is injured before the tour starts.

A more valid complaint will be:
Wasim knew that he doesn't want to play test cricket than why in the world did he accept the offer from PCB, specially after the squad was announced.
I am not sure whats going on inside PCB, but I, for one, do not see him (Waseem) playing test cricket anyway. If his aim is to win another world cup, he'd better concentrate only on ODI's.
I don't have a problem if he is to play one day cricket only. Atleast make it clear to the public and the cricket board that you don't want to play test cricket at all, specially pulling out of major test series.
He will still be awesome in the World Cup and that is what he is concentrating on. Afterr that he will retire anyway, so I see this as him keeping his powder dry for his last big chance at the big one. I would like to have seen him play but at 36 if he feels he can't give his all over 5 days can't really argue with it.
At the same time it gives a chance to youngsters like Sami to grab their chance, and they are good enough to do it.
I'm proud of Wasim and his accomplishments, so nothing to get mad about.
You have to understand, the guys not that well all the time either. He has diabetes, and I hope he controls it well.
I agree with Mr. Xtreme, he wants to finish the job he left uncompleted in 1999.
