Washing desi clothes

I generally hand-wash my shalwar qameez because the colors aren’t fast and I’m also afraid the dryer will shrink them. Except there are some clothes that I need to wash and I’m just not getting the time to do it. Can I just get them dry-cleaned? They’re just regular ghar ke kapray, nothing fancy on them.

Re: Washing desi clothes

koii maasii rakh leN...:) oops, you are in Boston! ok, take one piece of clothing and take a risk...see if dry cleaning will work.

Re: Washing desi clothes

As long as they are not super fancy ones, you can wash them in the washing machine on the lowest temperature possible. I do that and they have been fine. Dont mix your ordinary clothes with them and obviosly keep darks and lights seperate. :)

Re: Washing desi clothes

wouldn't dry-cleaning be a bit expensive for ghar kay kapray?
when this happens to me I simply fill the bathroom basin with soapy water and rinse out a single outfit per night. this goes really quick and easy as compared to finding the time to do a whole stack.

Re: Washing desi clothes

Thank you for the replies and advice.

Muzna, I like the idea of just doing it one piece of clothing at a time, that will definitely make it more manageable. But I just have so much studying to do that just the thought of doing laundry when I get home is exhausting! :) Do you think it'll be safe to dry-clean them, just this once?

MissFreudian, this is a really silly question, but will your advice work even with the commercial washing machines? As in the machines in the building's laundry room? I seem to remember someone telling me that these machines are too harsh on regular clothes like these, which is why I was hesitating.

Re: Washing desi clothes

I’m sure that it would be okay to dry clean…just make sure that you tell the clerk at the dry cleaners that the fabric may not be colour-fast. They will take special care.

Also…I remember there being a product that you can use at home called “Dryel”

This lets you “dry clean” clothing at home by just putting it in the dryer for 30 minutes. Could save you a bundle…
