Some people want to propagate the fallacy that Gen. Zia-ul-haq was a God, or at least a deity. Who are these “propagators” of Gen. Zia? They fall into a couple of categories: the ones who are jihadi fanatics, and the others who are ex-commie-neo-liberal fanatics.
Both of them have their own agenda to prove that Gen. Zia was not a mere mortal, or just a general in Pakistani army. They rather insist that Gen. Zia was a modern day God, a Messiah, or a deity.
According to neo-liberals (ex-commies) Zia single-handedly created Jihadis, Talibans, and above all MQM.
In reality, Gen. Zia played a role along with right-wing Pakistanis, Americans and other free-market forces to topple the commies. That’s all.
Unfortunately there is no way you can win a debate with the Jihaids (they prefer chopping heads) or the neo-liberals. So I rest my case.
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army's general?
errr, yet another idiotic post... antiobl, we understand your frustrations, but can you post references as to who claimed Zia as God, created Jihadis "single handedly"? Shot in dark doesn't always work. You are using this site more for your venting rather than discussing with some backing proof.

So the term for expressing an opinion is "venting"? If that is the case, then every opinion on this forum (and everywhere else) is obviously venting.
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army’s general?
Come on now. Just look at “Foundation of MQM” thread. I am a firm believe that we must all except our mistakes not make scapegoats of Zia, Wahabis, CIA, ISI, Afghans etc. even though they all played part in this mess.
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army’s general?
Well as far as I know, no one in Pakistan considers Zia a saint. Please don’t make him out to be what he clearly is not. Musharraf (despite his flaws) is easily more popular esp. among the younger generation because of his progressive views on education etc.
The greatest thing that Zia ever did was to persuade Imran Khan in 1988 to come out of retirement just before the Pakistani team were bound for West Indies :k: And Imran led from the front taking 23 wickets in the three tests (series was drawn 1-1)
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army's general?
Was Zia-ul-Haq a God? That is a blasphemy which calls for capital punishment & I don't even support capital punishment. Zia did nothing good for the country and we are still paying for his crimes 20 years after his death.
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army's general?
OBl, you can't please everyone yara!!
Zia could have made better choices [in hind sight] but he had to do what he had to do to stop Pakistan from being sandwiched between soviets and indians on both sides. I think it is not hard to imagine the impetus it would have give to BLA and pashtunistan "movements" as well as "requests" for intervention in pakistan [the favorite soviet ploy that was also used in afghanistan]. I know many people now say a soviet afghanistan would be modernized, educated, women wearing skirts :p but it would be a strategic nightmare for Pakistan. Whatever happened after the soviets left was not the fault of Zia, as he was already dead and future govts / military **... **up some good opportunities in afghanistan..
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army's general?
ZIA did what he was asked by uncle Sam to do.
The "strategy" at that time was to gather everyone against the communists and todays progressive were those days communists mind ya, like Faiz, Faraz etc.
Re: Was Zia-ul-Haq a God or just a Pak-army's general?
But then america was on board too, and fundamentalist made "better dedicated warriors" to quote some CIA walas! :D I think the problem comes back to lack of checks and balances in pakistan [one person screws up and the whole thing goes awry]. This is one good comment that I liked about imran: the ability of institutions to take better hits than individuals..
