From a devlopment stand point, British rule was fantastic. The entire rail infrastructure, roads to far off places in the North and complex lake system (in Punjab etc) are mostly the results of British management skills.

It could have been developed without the British too. Japan began modernising well after Britain controlled India, and Japan did it without British “management skills” and Japan today has one of the best rail systems in the world.
