GS information statistics display:

Most users ever online was 472, May 2nd, 2005 at 07:25 PM.

Is this grammatically correct? My common sense says it should be ‘were’.

Grammatically it is wrong. Capri has a point and he is right. Was should be were.
Here we are talking about ‘users’ and that is plural. Subject is a user not the number.
