the question is was the attacks on the United States on 9/11/01 in any way justifiable in Islam.
If they were not, what were the reasons?

dunno how much of "hot discussion" it will be since it has been discussed several times since 9/11/01 which was 17 months ago.
there is never any justification to kill innocent ppl, even in a proper war. murder can not be classified as war, this thing was pure murder, not allowed by islam.
Even if there was a proper war, there are rules about not killing innocent ppl, children, women and soldiers who put down their weapons, you can not damage property etc etc etc.
fairly cut and dry.
anyone who thinks that there was any justification for it in context of any religion needs to be slapped around with stale cod.

Jihad in Islam can be divided into two types:
1.) Jihad against the self
2.) Combative Jihad
The Jihad against the self is two overcome the beastial self, and to strive to worship Allah and over come the negative tendencies in the society etc.
The Combative Jihad is further divided into two types.
1.) Defensive
2.) Offensive
Defensive Jihad is fought when the land of the Muslims is attacked by the enemy. to defend the land is defensive Jihad. however civilians, women and children, and religous people like priests and rabbis cannot be killed. only who are directly involved in the invasion.
Offensive can only be fought in the presence of a legitimate muslim rulers who has the authority to declare Jihad offensively. again, this is an armed struggle between armies only.
The Prophet clarified also not to cut the fruit bearing trees and not to poison the well of the enemies.

sorry to disappoint folks but the more time passes, the more it appears it was an "agency" job rather than the work of some rag tag mullahs living in a cave who may think it's a good thing happening but didn't have the expertise to carry this one out.

well, whoever did it, we as Muslims have to clarify our standpoint. We have to categorically condemn these acts of terrorism as a Muslim nation.
The point is that killing innocent people is an evil act, and it doesn't matter who does it. we have to call people to good and call people away from evil.
