Warranty, is it worth buying?

I saw this neat little gadget at the electronics shop. The price looked pretty attractive so I decided to buy it. I took the gizmo to the salesman and asked him to check me out…he took the little thing to his computer and goes…well, you should buy warranty for it too. It is wise to invest another $60 for a 300 dollar thing..then he goes..of course government will have its share in the form of taxes…Not to mention, this gizmo is incomplete with this add on which is worth another $50.
Something that looked attractive at $300, all of a sudden started looking expensive for $450.
I am wondering what is your threshold dollar amount to buy warranties. Would you buy it for something that is less than $500

hmmmm
depends on what kind of gadget it is.

If it s something which is completely extra, I would first check out my bank balance.

Not a big fan or warranties. Most of'em are scams (to me at least).

I only got a warranty for my laptop as I consider it a major purchase, otherwise I don't bother.

Don't quote me on this, but I think that if something is going to go wrong with the purchase of an electronic gadget, chances are that it will happen in the first 2-3 months. And most gadgets have manufacturer warranty to cover that period. Uss ke baad, Allah maalik hai.

fayz: only warranty worthwhile gettin is the PSP (product service plan) from future shop…it has come in handy ENUF times for me…

cell fones battery stops chargin up properly, or anythin else goes wrong with the fone itself, simply get the cell fone replaced with another one of equal or less value, and each yr cell fone prices go down meanin that u get a newer model for ur fone…manufacturer won’t do that, they’ll take ur cell fone in and fix it and then give it back to u, or at most, give u the same make n modelreplacement fone…not to mention that it can take some time for them to figure out whats wrong with it etc, whereas at future shop, u practically get somethin better instantaneously…

similarly, if anythin else breaks down, same issue over and over again, goes for repair twice and the third time it simply gets replaced…anytime during the warranty coverage period…its awesome to get for appliances with moving parts…i’ve gotten 2 vacuums replaced from future shop that way, all within a 5 yr extended warranty period, without havin to pay anythin the first time around as the vacuum i got was the same price as the first one which broke down, and the 2nd time around only had to pay the diff in the price cuz the next replacement was of higher value…the diff came out to like $30 or somethin, which was really not that big a deal…better vacuum and a newer one 2 :k:

one more point with future shops PSP…they cover items which are not covered under the manufacturers warranty…such as remote controls for electronic devices…they are hardly ever covered by the manufacturer, they simply assume u’ll go out and buy a new one if the old one stops workin…future shops PSP covers that 2, so save a lil $$ there as well…

i tend to get most of my electronics (cept comp stuff) from Future Shop, and so far, i’ve alwayz gotten the warranty and it has almost alwayz come in real handy…

find out what the warranty covers from that store, not all stores have the same warranty features as the future shop PSP…and if its somethin that u think might come in handy at a later point in time, get it  worth the $$…

I never bother buy the separate warranty as it's covered by my Home and Contents insurance anyway.
