I came across an article and found the following interesting:

*It is reported this morning that American troops are attempting to communicate with Iraqis in the field via a hand-held electronic box known as a Phrasealator, which was first tried out in Afghanistan.

The user points to one of 1,000 phrases on a menu - such as “come out with your hands up” - and the box squawks out the message in Pashtu, Dari, Urdu or, in this case, Arabic. Unfortunately, there is no way the Americans can understand what the Iraqis say in reply.*

I can think of various reactions by the Iraqis …

Okay, here it is:

"Iraqis are giving passing Americans the "thumbs up" sign, which they interpret as a symbol of support. Its a Middle Eastern insult infact and "thumbs up" traditionally translates as the foulest of Iraqi insults—the most straightforward interpretation is "Up yours, pal" ".

Up yours is the most appropriate translation.

At least the feel comfortable saying that to the Americans. Imagine if they did that to Saddam? But Saddam deserves a date palm up his. With leaves and all.
