War for oil

If the war was for oil why didnt USA just took over the oil fields back in 1990 during the first gulf war.

Because the Saudis and Kuwaitis bankrolled them with a nice fat cheque so there was no need take over the oil fields. Re-building contracts also did a fine job of draining the sheikhs coffers and provided a nice booster for the US economy.

Judge^MentuLL,

I suppose you think we should not have gotten involved in that? So we should have let Saddam overrun Kuwait, then Saudi Arabia and then take the chance that Israel possible use nukes for fear of the threat that would impose?

I was just answering the question AAG. All the rest of the speculation you have offered is a seperate subject.

AAG

America should stay within it's own territory.

This is not the slave trade era when you can invade and imprison people just on the basis of their way of life, because it doesn't conform to yours.

Or maybe US does think that this is the slave trade era again!

As of now, you can't put anything past them.

Hope these stats help :D

  1. In 1973, the U.S. imported 35% of its oil from abroad, and only 5% from the Persian Gulf. That year the Arab nations imposed a five-month embargo on oil exports to the U.S. and economy suffered a huge blow.

  2. In 1990, when Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait, U.S. reliance on foreign oil had grown to 42%, with 12% coming from the Persian Gulf.

  3. Today, the U.S. imports 53% of its petroleum.

  4. By 2020, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that dependence will reach 64%..

There are no oil fields in continental US. And environmentalist are giving Bush admin hard time in exploring Alaskan oil.

Yes. Prices went way up. I was a kid then but I remember my parents having to be in long lines at the gas pump. When we wen't boating we had to pay twice the price at the pump per gallon.

  • Yes. U.S. has reliance on oil. However there are many parts of the world that rely on the importing of goods that the U.S. does to benefit their economies and provide for their people. I hardly find this suspect. *

Texas has oil. Alaska is a pristine place. A natural wilderness. I think it should stay that way. I think it's beneficial to the worlds envoirment.

Reserve to Production Ratios for Top Ten Oil Producing Nations
[thumb=B]reserves.JPG[/thumb]

The ratio of reserves to production gives a relative measure of the resources available in different oil producing countries. At current production rates, known reserves of crude oil in OPEC countries would last 29 to 142 years, with Iraq having the largest ratio.
(90% of Iraq’s oil fields are unexplored – dont have the source)

once more
OIL is biggggg factor. The threat for Israel will be eliminated, Israel will have more freehand. Control mid-east A-rabs.

Its not for OIL ... US may not have any interest in OIL ...

Its about diverting the monies made from OIL to rebuild the nation which will be thrown back several decades... in terms of destruction and war debt ... Do you think US is doing it for free? Iraq or the new piuppet givt will pay dearly ... Hey ... US companies need jobs and money too.. So, indirectly, the war will help US economy .. at the cost of a nation .. so what? ... If its good for US economy, its good... period.

[how else is Bush gona stimulate the economy, stupid?]
