I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. Hopefully someone can enlighten me about this. As far as I know, a Muslim who fights in a war for the cause of Islam and dies, automatically goes to heaven. Now, this being said, does the same apply for a Muslim who fights for his country? What about a Muslim in a non-Muslim country who fights and dies for his goverment? Even more, what happens when two Muslim nations are at war (ie: Iran-Iraq war), do the people who die on either side for their respective Muslim governments go to Heaven also? How does all this fit together, or does it only apply when a person fights for the cause of Islam? Any references would be appreciated also. Thanks in advance.

Defending yourself, your family and your home/country from Muslim aggression is call self defense and it is permitted.

The person who seeks victory and dies for islam and its cause gets jannah as a reward. Because muslim should'nt think i want to die he should be seeking victory and if he gets shaheed than alhamdulilah.
The person who fights and dies for his country, tribe, colour etc dies death of ignorance (jahilliyah)
It was narrated by Abu Hurirah that the prophet (SAW) says that: "Whoever fights under nationalistic banner, gets angry for it, calls for it or supports it, and for that gets killed then its a death of Jahilyah"
And the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) also said that: "People must stop dignifying themselves by their ancestors, or they will be to Allah less than (Al-Jual) scraps the filth by its nose."

It is narrated by Abu Daud that the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, "He is not one us who calls for Asabiyah, (nationalism/tribalism) or who fights forAsabiyah or who dies for `Asabiyah."

What does it mean to fight and die for "the cause of Islam". Muslim terrorists who kill and be killed for what they think/pretend is "the cause" does nothing but damage Islam. Each successive terrorist action that kills innocent people; Embassy Bombings < WTC < Daniel Pearl < attacks in Pakistan < Bali < Russian Theater etc... increases the number of people who believe that Islam is an intolerant, violent and dangerous religion (aka Islamophobia).
How, in any way, is the cause of Islam helped by these violent acts?

Given this, please explain to me why conflicts that involve "liberating muslim lands" such as Chechnya, Palestine, Kashmir don't qualify as fighting under a "nationalistic banner". Aren't they fighting to have their own separate state?
