SYDNEY, Aug 24: New South Wales are looking to expand their international coaching contingent by attempting to lure Waqar Younis to the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Waqar is currently working with the Pakistan squad in England and is contracted to the country until the World Cup, but David Gilbert, the Cricket New South Wales chief executive, said on Thursday he was interested in signing him as the state’s bowling coach.
“He was such an artist with his reverse-swing, and the outswing he would get with the new ball,” Gilbert said in the Sydney Morning Herald.
“We would be crazy not to be interested in someone with those kinds of skills, particularly when he lives in Castle Hill (in Sydney)."
A bowling coach vacancy has appeared with the loss of Anthony Stuart, who took a One-day International hat-trick against Pakistan in 1996-97, on a three-year deal with Wellington.
The New South Wales ranks also include Graham Thorpe, the former England batsman who will become the side’s full-time batting mentor.
Thorpe was a part-time appointment last season and his friendship with Waqar from their Surrey days may help strengthen the state’s support staff.—Agencies
He is probably tempted by the offer as he resides in Australia and no doubt is likely to be a more attractive package. May not be surprised if he does go.

Waqar Younis, Pakistan’s bowling coach, is being lined up to join New South Wales after the World Cup according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Dave Gilbert, NSW’s chief executive, has already said that he wants Waqar to replace Anthony Stewart, who recently left to take charge of Wellington in New Zealand.
I reckon he will go if he is offered the job and will take it up as his wife resides in Australia. Also, he is likely to get better package which naturally he may not resist.
Don’t be so narrow minded. The “goras” also work with the “kaloos” all the time. Woolmer, Chapli, Wright, Moody.. the list goes on and on. Waqar Younis is not Pakistan’s jageer. He should be free to work with anybody he wants, including India.
yeah...but we had him as our bowling coach and why we did not extend his contract...
sorry but we asians lack geniuses....or I should say we lack in un-covering them...so we should try our to keep them for us as long as possible...
its not a narrow minded thing....I work with goras all the time...I know how "open" they can be....but we (3rd world ppl) need to retain our experts...
any how can't keep the tide from rolling its way in or out when it does....
Seems like Pakistanis are making a killing in the foreign coach department. Intikhab Alam is the coach for Indian Punjab's state side, now Waqar is going to NSW. Newzealand had shown interest in Akram 2-3 years back, and Mohsin Kamal was the national coach of Bangladesh.
Hair lives in England now (Ehsan bhai ek fatwa hi dilwa dain us ka khilaaf) plus what Waqar did was cheating in his playing career, when he teaches Aussies to do it then it would become art
O Yo...Waqar should stay with Pak team...reverse swing...mmmm... :)
PS: But Waqar is an unorthodox bowler...always running up holding the ball in his left hand and at the last moment switch it to his right hand...no batsman can never pre-detect his action...so the Aussies are going to switch to that technique...
