KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and fast bowler Waqar Younis has been given permission by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to play for Allied Bank in the Patron’s Trophy tournament.
The Board on Saturday cleared an application filed by Allied Bank to allow them to replace their players Bilal Asad and Abdul Rauf, who are on duty with the Pakistan A team in India, with Waqar Younis.
"The Board has given us the required permission and Waqar will be playing his first match for us in Rawalpindi from today against KPT,’ ABL skipper Rashid Latif said on Saturday. Ironically while Waqar was sacked as captain and player after the World Cup, Rashid replaced him as captain immediately after the World Cup before stepping down himself in September after the home series against Bangladesh.
Rashid said that the bank had initially signed on Waqar on a contract for six months but if he wanted this arrangement would be permanent.
Waqar remains Pakistan’s second highest wicket-taker after Wasim Akram with 376 Test and 416 one-day wickets and only returned after playing Grade cricket in Sydney, Australia earlier this week.
The 32-year old has made it clear that he has no intentions of retiring as an international cricketer and was playing in the Patron’s Trophy to prove his form and fitness to the national selectors.
