Waqar, the destroyer, retires

One of the greatest the game ever saw or will see has decided to hang up his fast bowling shoes.

**Waqar Younis to retire after Lahore Test **

From our correspondent

LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Waqar Younis has told the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he would be announcing his retirement from all cricket after the second Test match against India.

Sources in the board said that Waqar had spoken to chief executive Rameez Raja on Tuesday on telephone and informed him that he wanted to announce his retirement from all cricket shortly after the second Test ends in Lahore.

“Waqar is in India at the moment doing some work for an Indian television channel but he is planning to come to Lahore and announce his retirement,” the source said.

Waqar, who formed one of cricket history’s best fast bowling pair with Wasim Akram has been ignored by the selectors since he failed to take Pakistan beyond the first round in the 2003 World Cup in South Africa as captain.

Since the World Cup Waqar has been putting off his retirement although Wasim also dropped after that tournament announced his retirement last year.

The source said that the decision by Waqar to retire so suddenly may have been influenced by the Board who is keen to appoint him as bowling coach with the senior team something that would not have been possible with him continuing to play first class cricket. Waqar who took 373 wickets in 87 Tests and another 416 wickets in 262 one-day internationals played domestic cricket earlier this year in a bid to win back his place in the Pakistan team for the India series.

but guys we should take this opportunity to remember the good times - times when Wasim and Waqar were not fast bowlers but supermen. Would someone like to remind us how the Burewala Express revolutionized fast bowling?

I have numerous videos of waqar and wasim destroying oppositions.

I remember when Bryan young of New Zealand was cleaned up by Waqar's blistering yorker and fell over. He was a toe-crusher for sure. People used to fear boucners earlier, he gave fast bowling a whole new outlook. Batsmen started fearing for thier feet.

Oh I dont have words, i have written alot about him, and i kindaa knew it was around the corner....i will always remember 90's for his runup, beautiful followthrough and those unbeilevable dismissals that he got........

Waqar Younis the one of the three greatest Fast bowlers ever. His retirement is truly an end of era of fast bowlers, he was the last truly genuine great fast bowler.

I agree.

You just don't see the class of Ambrose, Walsh, Wasim, Waqar, Donald any more among the current lot.

I still remember that day very well it was during the final exam's of 6th grade i woke up at around 4:00am to watch the game and i gave the reason to my parents that i need to study for the exam for waking up that early. Pak did poor in batting but Waqar got rid of both opners in secnd over Brian Young fell Ovar playing all around the Yorker at tromendous pace, his partner shuffled across th stupms " the commentrator said that he did every thing right but just exposed a cm of his leg stump and that was enough for waqar younis"

Drama was at its peack in last ovar when NZ required like 5 runs and three of them were gifted by Salim Mailk with an over through' waqar got rid of first batsman LBW first ball, next one was clean bowled then an over through then an LBW Appeal turned down and then the last batsman was cleaned up by an LBW"

THOSE WERE THE DAYS. I dont see anybody not even Imran Khan, Wasim Akram or Dennis Lilee doing what waqar could do in his prime.

finally it happened...............i am feeling so sad and dejected even though i knew it is coming......i dont know what to say.........most of u at KK knows how much i liked him.....waqar was my favorite and he will remain my favorite forever...at his peak, he was simply the best.......i guess whenever the ball used to be in waqieee hands, somehow i always expected that the next wicket is around...he had the best action with a perfect run up. How could we forget waqar's run up....With the ball in his left hand at the start of the run up and upper buttons of his shirt open with a thick solid chain hanging in his neck, waqar used to approach his opponent like a real tiger ....waqar was gifted with broad shoulders and really athletic built which made him such a graceful fast bowler...for example sami can bowl fast but he will never have that wild tiger look which waqar used to provide....

i would like to remind people that it was waqar who changed the fast bowling cultre in pakistan... wasim was playing since 1984 but till the emergence of waqar (1989), he was not very special .....anyone can go and check wasim performace from 1989-1990..he hardly got 3.5 wickets in each test match.....he was good but he was not lethal but waqar rolled in like a storm and just devastated every thing right away and that forced wasim to bring the best out of him too....and we all know that it was waqar younis who really mastered the reverse swing and made a best use of it.....you guys will be surpised to know but i know it personally from some common friends that it was waqar younis who really helped wasim to have full command on reverse swing....those were the days ( 1990-92) when both of them were great friends....imran has also admitted many times that waqar was very intelligent and used to pick up very fast.......once again, before waqar's emergence, do anyone of us rememebr wasim takin a lot of wickets using reverse swing.....

it was also waqar younis who really developed some bad habits in pakistanic cricket viewers by taking so many wickets in every one-day match in a very short spells....4 wickets in 10 balls, 5 wickets in 18 balls and even 6 wickets for so many times.... the list simply goes on and on....we all got so used to it that now we want our new lot of mediocre bowlers to repeat it but dude...its not gonna happen....becauae the magician and the destroyer has left the stage.....

SAMB. now it is your turn to produce a great article about waqr younis also or waqar's fans will be upset from u....saby do provide the link of those clips please...may be we can have one independent thread sayin good bye to this great hero in a style . right now india-pak series is taking its full attention but when once this test match is over and waqar announces his formal announcemnt we can open up a formal thread.....

:( sad news :(

I feel sorry, espiacally after watching current S's performance aganist Indian

Waqar was very good in his peak, I think it is a wise desicion because he's past prime and now should use his experience to help Paki bowler who are struggling very much

I think Wasim and Waqar has done alot for Pakistan, and i hope now they continue to help Pakistani bowlers

The experience between 2 is too great to be lost, we PCB must utilize it !

World cricket lost and are in the process of losing some brilliant bowlers the last few years. Donald, Wasim, Waqar, McGrath's getting old, Warne is pushing late 30's. Not many good youngsters to take their place.

:(

I agree with every word you ahve written,, it was raelly Waqar who started the new era, I remember that at one stage (like in 94) Waqar had Same nubmer os 5' wickets and 10' wickets with Wasim, even though he was playing well before him,. he was more lethal,.. Though Wasim was a calss act, but I enver liked his attitude. Wasim literally destroyed the career of Waqar just to save his own place, other wise when ever Waqr younis came back, he came back with a abngg, specially after 99 he was playing great, I remmber that Aus/Eng/Pak series in ENg, where he took 6 and 7 wickts in consecutive game,.

man I realyl feel sad :(. Iknew its all over for him, but still the news struck me badly.

u guys took words away from me.....I am a big fan of waqar.somebody once said "batsmen all over the world were waqared"

during any match i just used to watch him bowling believing that he can take wicket any time . he was an excellent bowler a total entertainer for the viewers.
we are still waiting for a bowler of his calibre to appear on world scene .

One of the greatest of all times. It is sad to see him go. Thanks for all the pleasure you gave us during your time as the premier bowler of Pakistan along with Wasim. Best of luck for the future. :k:

:disgust:

Indeed was a Master

Sad to know his is quiting, Wish him all the best.

:k:

I was lucky enough to see Waqar before his back problems when he was more side on and he was a truly awesome sight. That he came back having to change his action and still went on to become one of the all time greats says everything about the man. He is probably the most lion-hearted cricketers to have played for Pakistan since Imran Khan. I hope it's true that he will be offered a coaching role for the Pakistan team. I can't think of anyone better.

Man, really,, There is no right hand fast bowlers of his Calibre.. check his strike rate thats just awesome and other most close counterparts are well behind him. He has the ghiest ratio of taking wicket unassisted, that is LBW or Bowled or C&B.

I was fortuante enough to see his first match till his last match, he was a gem and it wont be easy for world cricket to produce his replacement.
Thanx Waqar for being such an entertainer.
