Waqar confirmed by PCB as World Cup captain

Incumbent captain Waqar Younis will lead Pakistan at least until the end of the 2003 World Cup, according to new team manager Khawaja Nasir.

Nasir, a retired brigadier, who has been freshly appointed following the dismissal of Yawar Saeed during the ICC Champions Trophy, looked to squash rumours that Waqar was under pressure for his position after a recent downturn in the team’s performance.

Speaking at the official launch of the Australia-Pakistan Test series at Colombo, Nasir said: “He (Waqar) has been categorically told by the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, General Zia, who is here in Sri Lanka, that he will captain the team in the 2003 World Cup.”

Waqar claimed to be unconcerned by speculation that he faced the axe unless there was a quick revival to the team’s fortunes during forthcoming series against Australia and Zimbabwe.

“I have never been worried about whether I am captain or not,” he said. “I have that job at the moment and I will concentrate on doing my best so that Pakistan win.”

Pakistan will play three Test matches against Australia starting Thursday without the services of key players, including leading batsmen Inzamam-ul-Haq and Yousuf Youhana, who are both injured, veteran fast bowler Wasim Akram and opener Saeed Anwar, who have decided to take a break.

thats good news..:k:
atleast one thing is certain for the worldcup

Good news indeed! :k:

Yeah Baby :hehe:

A loss for the whole team, I'll say!! He had time and he did worse now it's time for some "fresh blood"!

Care to elaborate on which young blood should lead the side.

Younis Khan, the guy has not even played enough test matches and less than 100 ODI - not enough experience.

Inzi - The guy has a surgery almost every month, how is he expected to lead the team.

Wasim Akram- the cowardly refused to play against Australia, that shows his spirit.

Shoaib Akhtar - I will be happy enough if he is part of the team every game, him being a captain is long off.

Rashid Latif - If he takes over it will be like Deja Vu Aamir Sohail once again.

Saeed Anwar - This guy doesn't even know if he is going to play in the next match.

Saqlain - This man doesn't know the difference between playing for his country with national pride and playing for Surrey with greed.

Shahid Afridi - If he takes over, our team will become a double wicket team.

Abdul Razzaq - I will be happy if he can win matches for us against quality teams.

I'm not saying Waqar is the best captain in the world but he is the best man to lead the side till WC.

well said Umair..
he is the only options for Pakistan..
brinigng Moin wont help much.. remermbe in whihc situaion he left the team after the tour of newzealand.. a disaster... Waqar atleast gave them some rexptblity again....
and he is not a relaible wicket keeper,,,
And he is chatter box behind the stumps...

ROTFL!!!

The Game Responds:

*Say goodbye to the World Cup, boys; Waqar being captain will bring on too many "groups" within the team, resulting in a disastrous performance. That has always been the case when Waqar is around. Don't expect too much. People, That Is All.*

Keep dreaming friend, there is no groups in the team, it only happend once and that was against Amir Suhail.
No one holds a grduge against Waqar.
He is the best man to lead the side rightnow.

The only reason Waqar is still captain is because there aren't any alternatives. His capataincy has been hopeless over the last few months, which we could accept, but now there are definitely divisions in the camp as well which is totally unacceptable. Someone has to take responsibility and deal with it.

Waqar made another poor decision today, playing Sami instead of Kaneria. The pitch is already showing signs of taking spin on the first day and omission of Kaneria might prove expensive as the match goes on.

true :k:

I doubt that I think he is doing a pretty good job with the captency but he’s becoming a bit expensive when it comes to bowling. Othewise I think he is cool. :k:

Indeed that was a very bad decision.

I totally agree w/ u..

The Game Responds:

*Question, my friend, when Wasim Akram was the captain, nobody had any doubts about his place in the side; I just can't look at Waqar in the same way. In my honest opinion, if he wasn't captain, he doesn't even deserve his spot in the team. Wasim needs to lead again for this one last time; and I am very serious here(Although I know that there is not a very big chance of that happening). People, That Is All.*

This time even I agree with you.

Umair and Co,

If I criticize a sportsman I don't leave alone the facts of him being my buddy or my beloved player or whatever.
There are things to differentiate, if I fail as a manager in a company I GO, I resign!

And so should Waqar, although I really like him as a bowler. But thats a different story. Don't you think?

Well concerning Wasim, there is this problem of "group building" which surely does exist!
And maybe this is the reason why this "coward" didn't play against Australia.
