This is only my second post but I might as well get started. I’m really really interested in learning Urdu. I think the language is beautiful and have a general interest in becoming fluent. Are there any books, software, etc that any of you could reccomend?
I’ve studied Spanish and Italian throughout my University career, but unfortunatly cannot fit any more language classes into my shedule. I have experience learning new languages and am somewhat self taught in german. My friends have been really supportive of my desire to learn and started posting an “urdu word of the day” on our refrigerator every morning. The words they choose to teach me, however, have been more detrimental to my general knowledge of the language than bennificial (more curse words and slang than anything). I hope to start learning the language as soon as I return home from Italy (where I’m studying now) in a month.
I listen to Pakistani music in an effort to try and pick up general pronuciation of the words but need a reference to really make any headway. Any words of advice? Any and all help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks all!
Re: Wantin to learn Urdu, any suggested books, materials, etc?
Ask your pakistani friends to teach you, thatll be the easiest way. You'd have practising partners too. I dont know any books for learning urdu, but the urdu-learning people I have met are always using hindi learning books to learn hindi since it is very similar to urdu and the books are much more easily found in shops. People on this message board often use urdu written in english letters, you could use that as refrence and perhaps ask your friends what it means.
If theres anything you want to know about any word or anything, feel free to ask.

we have had many such threads here but people were usually naughty. But i am mama's nice li'l girl and would only teach you the good words.
Ur first sentence should be ' mujh sai shaadi karo gai" and try saying that to every Pakistani/Indian guy you meet. (it means i love ur culture). They will be pleasantly surprised and you would make freinds in no time.

Sud
yes I think you can pick up a few words of urdu - but in order to LEARN it properly you will have to spend a bit more time on it. The grammer is a bit different from the Euro langs. Also the script is totally different. It is written right to left. So your best bet would be to get a few primers, and start learning the script as well as simple sentence building on your own. Perhaps if you could get such a primer, one of your urdu speaking friends could give you a lesson a day (about 30 minutes / day)
Keep us informed of your progress

This german guy I know was learning Urdu using India Travel Guide which was actually teaching basic Hindi. The guide was written in English so it didnt matter about Urdu or Hindi script. When spoken, it can be almost impossible to tell the difference between Hindi and Urdu.
