Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

Hi, i’ve been wanting a bike since 6 months now. It is actually a motorbike, a small one, lets call it a pit bike.

The problem is that my dad won’t let me buy it, he keeps saying it is dangerous etc. I tried to persuade him to let me buy it but he still says no, at the moment im taking my driving lessons and even if i pass i won’t get a car straightway because i have no job.

So i thought i’ll save up my own money and buy the bike, so now after 6 months i saved enough money from birthday and eid money to buy the bike. So i told my dad that i want the bike and he keeps saying no. I asked him why and he tells me to save up for a car, i ask him, do you think i’ll get a car for £300? He then says when you work, you’ll get one. But then i can’t find a job where i want and i don’t want to go elsewhere.

The thing is he came back from Pakistan last week, and was telling me that our family has more motorbikes etc. So i asked him why can’t i have a bike of my own in UK, he keeps saying it is dangerous, so i asked him isn’t it more dangerous in Pakistan where the roads are dangerous, where people don’t wear a helmet and ride without a license and even 8 year olds ride a bike. Then he tells me to shut up and forget about the bike.

I don’t get it, why doesn’t he realize that 6 months is a long time to save £300 by just staying at home, and the bike i want is smaller and much safer, i didn’t even ask him for anything in 6 months, i’ve just been a quiet boy and saved £300 and been praying to Allah to fulfil my wish. I have saved enough for the bike, i feel 6 months been like 10 years :frowning:

just obey ur dad........

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

**simply, demonstrate to ur dad that u will be a responsible rider. if u r in the indian sub-continent or middle east, i understand ur dad's apprehensions and i commend him to make a wise decision not to let u ride a bike. remember one thing: a lot of time accidents happen as a result of someone else' mistake.

age is the major factor...how old are u? if u r a teenager, its in ur best interest NOT to ride a bike if u r in danger zone [middle east and/or India, Pak]**

u r tooo young and its NOT safe. i see fatalities time and again due to the reckless behavior of youngsters riding on their bikes on the highways. no wunder why the insurance is soo high for young kids under 25. there is NO need for u to ride a motorbike. its too dangerous!**

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

If your 18 learn to drive and get a car, much safer

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

That's unreasonable and you're old enough to get a bike. England is also much safer when it comes to motorbikes because quite a few people use them. But I guess your dad is just a bit over-protective.

EDIT: Although yeah a car would be safer.

haven't u looked at the statistics on young kids dying in motorbike accidents? r u urself an 18 year old?

its better to be safe than be sorry ...

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

Ofcourse there are fatalities in all forms of transport and admittedly the percentage of injury on a motorbike would be higher I'd imagine. But in the UK motorbikes aren't THAT dangerous because there's plenty of riders there and there's an awareness. So you can't really compare the UK in particular to North America, South Asia or whatever.

Indeed better safe than sorry. Hence my closing statement that a car would definitely be safer.

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

thats what i had initially said...bike must be deferred for now. period!

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

move to pakistan .......

Re: Want to buy a bike but dad won't let me :(

Are we saying there should be an age bar for motorbike riders? Because I don't think that should be the case. My advice was the car is safer but I wouldn't say don't get a bike. Its cheaper, safer in small towns, convenient in traffic and minimal maintenance. Sometimes it just makes sense.

Also, It depends on training and awareness. I'm a big fan of motorbikes but I'm not a blind follower. I've had two of my friends die in motorcycle accidents in UAE but of course like I said its where you ride and how you're trained. We have a very poor culture of motorbike safety and training here so that might be a contributing factor. In the UK though road fatalities involving motorbikes are lower than cars and have fallen consistently over they years. The government runs the 'Think Bike' campaign constantly and there is better training provided. Also the OP is looking for a very low powered city-bike, not a superbike so I don't see what the fuss is about.

Not playing stubborn or anything, just looking at both sides of the coin.
