I want a device mainly to “read pdf files” - could be mobile phones or PDAs but I want it at the lowest cost possible. Meaning if a mobile phone has the feature of reading pdf files but has few features together - that’s fine with me as well.
I don’t wanna spend much on getting a ‘device’ to read pdf files thus I don’t need the mobile phones with lots of features or expensive PDAs.
For example, I was thinking about Motorola e680i but I read the reviews that the battery life is no good. So anything else I can go for?

Hmm, I read PDFs on my PSP, but thatll b too expensive if you want a device just for PDFs. So yeah a cell-phone or Palmtop would be your best bet, don't know much bout those though so cant help.

you cant just read a normal PDF. Has to be converted to mini (or whatever) PDF format these devices support. You will loose quite a bit of formatting in my experience.

On the Palm side u can go for the Palm Z22 which is under $100, but u don't get much space. Or u can go for the Tungsten E2 for $200. For the extra 100 u get Bluetooth and an SDIO slot which lets u add functionality and storage.
On the Windows CE side there is HP iPAQ rx4240 Mobile Media Companion Mobile Media Companion. Although a bit pricey but its got a really good interface. There are others but with not enuff options.

No but a PDF is not just a ASCII file either. I'm just telling it as it is. I bought th best PDA on the market at time Dell X50v SVGA resolution screen wifi etc.... VGA output for gods sake. Was a total piece of ****. Never used it for more than checking GMail for a day. Same can be said for Palm. Battery dies and data goes with it.
Re: Want a "device" to read pdf files - suggestions needed.
Make great remote terminals with bespoke applications but for replacing mundane tasks on a computer; limited CPU/RAM and screen limitations make them near useless IMO.

Once you accept the size of the screen there's a lot PDA's can do. I've been using them for almost a decade and now I'm totally dependent on them. From reading ebooks to dictionary, GPS, storing passwords, playing games, taking and viewing pictures, audio and video, network scanning, list making, notes taking, working on portable Office apps incuding email, text messaging, virtual terminal and ofcourse using it as a phone. How can it ever be called useless.
Lastly, everything is stored on flash media so data is not wiped out when the battery dies.
Re: Want a "device" to read pdf files - suggestions needed.
thats the difference "e-book" yes they can be great for that. A PDF is not a e-book however.
Only WM5 started using a flash for storage. I have owned a Plam Z72, T3 and a X50v all uses volatile memory. You loose massive performance installing to external memory.
I have used them as GPS, one of the reasons I bought a palm. Again compared to a stand alone unit was crap. Firslty need to sort out a connection, usually BT. Palm seems to handle virtual serial ports quite well. PocketPC a load of problems. Plam cant handle connection to mobile phones not specifically on it's list which is ghay or support WPA. Once GPS working sound in comparison to a dedicated unit such as TomTom One is crap frankly. I cant hear it on the X50v when driving or on full volume waffles.
The topic was and is something to read PDF. For that all pda's I have ever come across been useless.
Forogt tot add to list the MDA Vario aka HTC Wizzard, Orange SPV C500 known as Audiovox or something in states. All these with those mentioned above gather dust in my room.
