Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

Is it safe? Am I going to be shot by some jealous jaahil SOB poor person who figures if she has a digi camera, then she probably has 1 million ruppees in her pocket too?

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

It's safe......they have digicams in karachi too...you wouldn't be the first one carrying the digicams there...

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

You'll be safe. Watch out for karachi guppies tho.... they might ambush you and pose for pics :p :p :p

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

There are better ways to brag bout havin a digi camera

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

stop being silly PCG... btw can you take tons of pictures of everything... new developments and stuff and post them here. Can you try and prepare a "safarnama" similar to the one i so craftly put together 2 years ago?. It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

yh its safe…ur prolly wont be tha only 1 wit a digi cam there..others got money too:smack:

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

Waqi, you wish I was bragging. I don’t brag, otherwise, I’d have posted way more information about myself on this forum.

I am asking, because the last time i was there, we would walk out in black chaddars covering up entirely if we were going to a shaadi. Reason being, because we didn’t want anyone to see the jewelry, etc, since it increases chances of being robbed. :frowning:

Knowing karachi some bum might snatch the camera out of my hand, or mug me or something. :bummer:

Gamma, that’s what I would love to do.

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

In past 3 months 12,000+ cell phones were SNATCHED in Karachi. I don't think it is safe. One of our relatives, their son almost got killed while he was outside his home washing his car and few men approached him and demanding that he give his cell phone up. When he resisted, they threatened to shoot him and that led him to throw his cell away from him and men ran towards the phone. Social Terrorists even snatch jewelry from women, even when they are being worn... this is the situation there. The MQM terrorists now rob and hurt visitors instead of late 80s and early 90s killing rampages.

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

To PCG: duuuuuuuuuhhh ofcourse anywhere u go loaded up with gold jewelry in the middle of night, being robbed is more expected.

About camera, dont just walk around with it around ur neck...jsut have it in ur backpack or purse and please don't put the lable on ur back that 'I HAVE CAMERA IN HERE " :D

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

PCG, I walked around with a camera (quite visible at times) in Saddar and had no problems at all. Yeah, the poor kids chased me and wanted me to take their pictures cause they thought I was a journalist, but it was all good. I did that for about 3 weeks in Saddar, and you know what Saddar is like ... crowded, male dominated, etc.

Let me just add that my mother and I travelled around in rikshaws everywhere on our own and were never harrased once or treated poorly. If anything, everyone knew we were not from around there and treated us very kindly.

Obviously, wear a chaddar and cover up if you are wearing jewellery, and even if you are not, it would make sense to at least wear a chaddar.

Have fun! Karachi is quite an exciting city.

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

What's funny is that when you go to the nearest police station to report the crime, you are bound to see a robber working as a police officer in the station.

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

** lol, well, you should be kinda careful though. Esepcially in karachi, almost every other person has had their cell phone’s stolen, so digi cams might be a target also. Just make sure you don’t expose it, and one word of advice, when you’re about to take a picture, just look around for a sec to see if anyone’s watchin or if you think there might be ppl who could take it from you. At least you’ll be aware of the people around you.

P.S.- I dunno how long ago you went to paki, but ppl there now have a heck lot more money than they did two-three years ago, and during those years, a heck load of ppl frm foreign countries have gone back and settled their, so ppl are quite aware of these things****, you won’t need to worry as much as you did when you last when there.**

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

That’s not true…Wear a dupatta if you don’t like to wear a chaddar…Karachiites are pretty open minded…My whole family lives in Karachi(& i have lived there too for 4 years)…They never had to cruised through the streets of Karachi, wearing big chaddars…

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

Goliko, it depends on where in Karachi you are and how comfortable you are. I personally did not feel comfortable walking around Tariq Road or certain other areas in a mere dupatta. It all comes down to your own comfort level. In Clifton/Defence, dupatta is fine, but in other areas, I would rather wear something more.

Re: Walking around with a Digi Camera in Karachi

^Well you are right...It also depends on your own comfort level...
