Wajih’s declaration has vindicated govt’s stance on election from present assemblies, and his candidacy has thrown the opposition in even more turmoil. :hehe:
THE lawyers have sprung a surprise on the nation by proposing Mr Wajihuddin Ahmad as a presidential candidate. This would now appear to vindicate the government spokesman’s claim that by deciding to contest the election the lawyers have accepted the existing assemblies as the electoral college for the presidential election. All this gives a new twist to the constitutional drama being enacted in Islamabad. Until Monday’s unexpected announcement, the retired Supreme Court justice had shown no proclivity for politics, though there is no doubt he proved himself to be a man of principles when he refused to swear allegiance to the 2001 Provisional Constitutional Ordinance. As he told the DawnNews channel, he had no illusions about the outcome of the contest, but his idea behind the decision was to help lawyers win their first battle for democracy. The nomination will now ensure that the presidential polls are contested and General Musharraf is not given the dubious honour of being ‘elected unopposed’.
The opposition has been caught unawares by the turn the situation has taken and the various parties are now seen scrambling to adopt a ‘correct’ (read expedient) position on the presidential election. As a result what we have at the time of writing is a bundle of contradictions with various political leaders adopting a stance that amounts to their going back on what they have been saying for some time. The PML-N is the only one to have extended support to Mr Ahmad’s proposed nomination without reservations. The PPP, while reacting positively, is now considering the option of putting up its own candidate. As for the MMA, its own house is so divided that the lawyers’ move has confounded the confusion in their ranks. Qazi Hussain Ahmad’s promise to support Mr Ahmad’s candidature is intriguing given the JI chief’s zealous pleadings with the MMA leadership for quitting the assemblies en bloc. If his plea is accepted it would leave the electoral college without the MMA men and women, apart from the handful in the Senate. This too is hypothetical since the resignation issue that has been talked about for nearly two years has eluded a definitive decision. And now we have the NWFP Chief Minister Akram Durrani opposing the dissolution of the provincial assembly saying such a move could benefit Al Qaeda. This muddies the political waters even further. That leaves us with many ifs and buts and the Supreme Court has yet to give a decision on the uniform issue. Pakistan is neither a dictatorship nor a democracy and the current situation epitomises this truth. We have a general in uniform insisting on being elected president by the outgoing assemblies. The state’s coercive apparatus is busy rounding up the regime’s opponents. Thebewildering array of President Musharraf’s opponents have now decided to give legitimacy to the electoral college by taking part in the stage-managed presidential polls to take place on Oct 6. Let us hope the outcome of it all does not mean a regression to unbridled despotism.
Re: Wajihuddin candidacy provides legitimacy to Presidential race - DAWN
APDum is all dazed and confused now, with Qaza saying one thing, Fazlur Rehman saying another thing, Nawaz poor thing can’t saying anything, Imran saying all kinds of rubbish as usual, while PPP always sticks the knife in from outisde. What a circus.
Re: Wajihuddin candidacy provides legitimacy to Presidential race - DAWN
Actually just the opposite. The lawyers have given the elections the mirage of legitmacy by providing an alternative according to the author. However what the writer does not say is that there are a total of 23 presidential hopefuls, all from various political parties and thus provided the legitmacy well before the lawyers gave a candidate.
People will read what they want, regardless of the truth.
Re: Wajihuddin candidacy provides legitimacy to Presidential race - DAWN
abay politics kay cheetoN! this is done because there is a chance that SC might give Mush a Go signal to get elected from the same assembly for the second time. If that is the case, do you expect lawyers or same opposition that was stand by with SC the whole summer to go against its decision? Rather have a geniune candidate (far far far better than Mushy of course) and have him do dual. They want Mush to be wardi-less after the election and then they will drag him in SC for scruitny and charges.
ISLAMABAD, Sept 27(Reuters): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday filed papers at the Election Commission nominating President Pervez Musharraf to stand in the October 6 presidential election. Party leaders and government officials accompanied Mr Aziz to file the papers. The PM told media, “President Pervez Musharraf is the candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and its allies and we are confident that he will succeed,” he said. Mr Wajihuddin Ahmed, a former Supreme Court judge who refused to swear allegiance to Musharraf after his 1999 coup, also filed his nomination. Makhdoom Amin Fahim of Pakistan People’s Party also filed papers to contest in the presidential election. Security was tight in Islamabad with a ring of police monitoring traffic passing through checkpoints and riot police standing by. (First Posted @ 09:00 PST Updated @ 12:06 PST)
Well, this is Pakistan where many jokers live. If I win in election or succeed in any competition than that election or competition is legitimate AND if I lose or failed than that is illegitimate, rigged … Ayayee wayee shayee. This is how crooks run their show
If Wajjih win the election than Presidential election would be legitimate for Lawyers, MMA, TI, Journalists, and all ‘Ayeray Ghairay, Nathu Khairay’. They would put bhangra on road.
If Amin Fahim wins the election than election would become legitimate for PPPP and they would put Ludi on road.
But if President General Pervaiz Musharraf wins, than for all these crooks, election would become illegitimate and rigged. An unwanted election and that this election should not have happened. What a looser they would become (what they always are).
Re: Wajihuddin candidacy provides legitimacy to Presidential race - DAWN
So what are the possible outcomes here:
mush wins
1a. And wardi comes of
1b. Or wardi stays
Mush loses
2a. Keeps wardi
Outcomes:
1a: new coas jails mush through court
1b. No change. Iftikar quits or worse
Prez becomes puppet under coas
In all scenarios, blood flows in pakistan
It is also possible that President Musharraf resigns and new COAS takes over, then he starts hanging all Judges, Lawyers, Journalists, and Politicians who oppose him and his dictatorial rule. Start bombing all FATA with Patakha indiscriminately, and destroy all madrasas and mosques that are involved in any sort of sectarianism. Ban Ninja dress from Pakistan and close all spurious TV channels.
We should remember that many countries are ruled by army directly and people cannot do anything other than start resistance movement and in process get killed, as army in such countries keep ruling indefinitely. Many so-called Kingdoms are also ruled because of military under the ruler though masses are against the ruler (like Saudi Arabia and most other Muslim Arab countries).
