I want to buy it becuz it looks pretty and smart, has a strong body and it is small in size…I do not want to hear about mazdas, toyotas, hondas for now.
Does anyone owns jetta? and what are the pros and cons about it?
Re: VW Jetta 2008
I used to own one. Pretty smart car. Gives a lot of premium features. I had a turbocharged engine (not V6) and the car would literally fly off the red. Only problem, and this is a significant problem, is that the car is assembled in Mexico and so the build quality is definitely poor. Within the first two years, the car had two major recalls and breakdowns. All of them were fixed under warranty, of course, but you don't expect a new car to have such major problems.
Other than that, the rear seats have tiny leg space, so its a very compact car in the same range as Corolla and Civic. But for its price, it was way too expensive (about $25k), so definitely not bang for the buck. It would be palatable if the car would be German built (bragging rights) or the reliability was better.
One caveat is that all the above are based on Jetta 2002. If things have significantly changed in the last few years, then it could be a different story. I doubt the interior space or the manufacturing location has changed.
Re: VW Jetta 2008
You looking at the GTI or the GLI?
Here's my list of pros and cons... I don't know much about the 2008 Jetta though... this is based on my research from last year when I was looking for a new car.
Pros:
- Good looking car
- Decent handling on the road
- Good trunk space in the GLI
Cons:
- GTI notorious for it’s B-Pillars blocking peripheral driver vision
- VWs in general have a pretty high maintenance cost *] VW Golfs and Jettas have been named the least reliable of the import category by JD Powers and Consumer Reports for the last 4 years in a row!

Thanks for the input Faisal. Here I thaught all Jetta cars are German built and hence a good built quality that I was looking for. If It is manufactured in Mexico then I do not see any point in purchase them...I am going to contact the dealer and find out

Thanks so much Umar. What is GTI and GLI?
I am looking for auotmatic, low hp version.
Can you please shed more light on high maintenance part? If I am leasing it, will I not get the maintenance coverage?
Also when you said least reliable of the import...does that mean import from Mexico as Faisal mentioned?
Re: VW Jetta 2008
The North American Jetta and Golf have historically been made in Mexico.
I think the 2008 Jette is made in Mexico, but I think the 2008 Rabit is still made in Germany. In 2007 it was definately built in Germany. I don't know if VW meant to move production to Mexico or not.
The Rabbit is the same car as the Jett except in hatchback, which means more usable space in the trunk.
Re: VW Jetta 2008
Jal_Pari? Where are you located. Canadians have the option of getting the last generation VW Jetta/Golf brand new for < 20k.
Re: VW Jetta 2008
At least you're looking to drive a Jetta. There are women out there who drive M3's and M5's but when you ask them why such a powerful car they say because it looks pretty.
Jettas are pretty inexpensive FWD cars that'll last you quite a while. I don't think they offer the turbocharged cars for the 2008 model.
Umar Talib- The GTIs and GLIs are completely different with different body styles. Albeit, they're a lot better than Jettas and more fun to drive. But girls belong in Jettas lol jk.
Re: VW Jetta 2008
I think the Jetta is sexy! go for it but make sure you get a black one. :)
