voting on nov 7th

GSers,

i hope those of u who can vote in states, did vote today.

i am simply amazed to see this, when i went to vote this evening at a local designated elem school & for 30 minutes that i had been at the polling location, no body non-Caucasian showed up.

i was the only non Caucasian there.

the elderly volunteers who were conducting the polling logistics of getting voters’ signatures & directing voters to the voting booths, all had an unexpected look on their faces, when i went to vote.

that shows how lax we are in having our say in the governance of the country we live in.

did anyone else, felt this at the polling locations?

share if u like.

Dushi

Re: voting on nov 7th

I didn't vote because by the time I got out of school I was too tired to walk to the polling place :(

Re: voting on nov 7th

I think as a society we are just not acclamated to being involved in the political process. like i learned very very early on...democracy is not a spectator sport..meaning u cant watch it...u need to be involved in democracy.

I think we need to address why minorities in general are not involved, i wonder if it is because perhaps they feel that due to thier low numbers in the general population the vote will not matter much.

but really ppl generally win by margins, its really only by 5 or 7 points that one candidate will win over another so those few numbers make a hugggeee difference. i wish ppl were aware of that.

anyway, dushwari...i think you should be proud that you were out there when no one else non-caucasian showed up! i think you represented our community well!

so good job making the effort, and keep up the good work...which i am sure you will.

Re: voting on nov 7th

i voted in early voting. wooohoo im so cool.

Re: voting on nov 7th

I voted just after the polls opened up and I don't think I've ever seen lines like yesterday. There were a lot of latino voters out.

Do you live in a precinct with a small minority population? Remember that voters are divided by precincts, so if your and surrounding neighborhoods aren't very diverse, chances are your precinct won't be either.

Re: voting on nov 7th

The state I live in is completely Republican and mostly white americans so when I get the opportunity to vote to balance it out a bit where there could be atleast some democrats representing the state, I jump at the chance.

I wish there were more hispanics voting and of courses desis voting but most of the desis in this state are FOBs(fresh off the boat) and have only been in this country 4 or 5 years. I wanna move back to the northeast!!!:teary1::grumpy:

Re: voting on nov 7th

i voted (as usual) and felt a sense of pride in doing so when i left....Alhamdulillah here in virginia i saw many muslimah's voting while i was there.
inshAllah during the 2008 presidential elections I am thinking about getting together with the local mosques and starting a voter registration drive in each and every masjid in our state...during the month of ramadan (thats when we most of the people come). I'm hoping this will encourage more Muslims to vote.

It would be nice if others can take this idea and start it in their state as well if they havent already. A nationwide voter registration drive in all the masjids would be ideal...but perhaps that is wishful thinking.

Re: voting on nov 7th

I voted and there was a very mixed community of voters.

AE - great idea

Re: voting on nov 7th

much politics will get involved even in such kind of workings :)

Re: voting on nov 7th

right on!!!

no its not i am doing that!!! thats right!!! i am starting it soon! i could use any and all help. If u want to contact me personally please do so. I am actually in the process of doing this right now. You have no idea how mny muslims told me its a bad idea. meanwhile non-muslims think its a great idea, but will need some serious work. anyway i am getting together with some non-muslim ppl to figure out what needs doing ...but please, if you are into this...let me know!!!

and anyone else out there!!! let me know!!

Re: voting on nov 7th

i dont see how...im just going to be handing out voter registration forms...and having people fill them out right in front of me....perhaps give em a free pen or something for doing so lol!

sometimes people get lazy about filling out forms...once they get their cards perhaps they wont be so reluctant to vote. inshAllah

Re: voting on nov 7th

im in! give me whatever info you have....and inshAllah i will be talking to my local imam about doing this at the masjid....and also talk to some other people about this soon.

Re: voting on nov 7th

thanks..nice to get some support out there.

Re: voting on nov 7th

Re: voting on nov 7th

^I think Tanzeem-e-Islami has a better understanding of it.
