I want to soon start the MBA program and I just realized that I will need to do volunteer work or some type of extra curricular activity in order to get into a really good school and so it would look good on my resume…anyone have any suggestions on where to start? Has anyone done any volunteer work???Should I volunteer at a school or something?? I wanted to also know if it should be business school related…like volunteer with a business…does that make any difference or volunteer all together makes a difference…suggestions??? Anyone? Thanks.
Re: Volunteer Work + Grad School
errrr... to get into a good MBA school, you don't need volunteer experience but actual work experience, and 3-years of F-T experience tends to be the minimum requirement.
Re: Volunteer Work + Grad School
ya but don't u also need some type of volunteer experience.....to be well rounded???
Re: Volunteer Work + Grad School
^ it may certainly boost your application, but generally speaking is not a requirement. Good GMAT scores, 3 years of f-t work experience and a good undergrad GPA are the main considerations (and not necessarily in that order).

Depends where you want to apply...at an ultra-elite MBA school (University of Chicago, Kellogg, Wharton, MIT Sloan, Col, Stanford, Harvard), volunteer work (preferably a leadership role) would be a must.
At an elite business school (Darden, Duke, Michigan, Yale, NYU, Yale, Berkley, UCLA, Dartmouth, Cornell), your chances would be minimal if you have done no volunteer work but it is not impossible.
Plus, it is not about doing volunteer work six months prior to your application to a business school. There should be enough demonstration of the fact that the candidate has legitimate interest in a certain activity; be it sports or community service. Top business schools want people who possess wholesome personalities. Your undergraduate extra curricular record would be important and a top B-school would appreciate those candidates who have played a leading role in several activities. Again, you do not have to be a superstar but there should be some sort of demonstration of a proactive personality. Same applies to your post-college life. Just start doing something which you enjoy and do it with passion and try to play a leading role. Getting into a top 10 USA Business school is not easy and it requires at least one full year. Good luck.
