so how many words does a 14 month old speak? My son is that age and he is not speaking many besides mama and dada (sometimes if he feels like it) and most of time i hear him saying AnNaa, AnNaaa… everything is AnNaaa… I dont knwo hwere he got that from but if he wants something he points to it and screams Annaaa anNaa… till i give him…
I try to name things and tell him but he doesnt say it… i do get a feeling that he understands what I am saying just not saying it with me…
I remeber my doctor telling me that at 15 month they speak about 10 words… his 15months appointment is in few weeks and he is no where closer to 10 words…
once i heard him saying babbaaa when he wanted his bottle wich dropped in the car while i was driving… but never again…
At day care, his teacher tells me that sometimes he says “daaan” when she asks if he is all done eating but he has never said that infront of me so i am not sure about that…
I guess i just want to know about other members at what age their kids started saying more words…?
Thanks,
Sanna
Re: vocabulary of a 14 month old....
Hi Sanna, I have 3 boys. Eldest has speech delay. Middle one does not. Youngest was a "late bloomer" - was speech delayed but caught up by age 3.
Its good to look into this further because the earlier you address a delay the sooner it gets better. Are you in USA? Here there is a federally funded program called Early Intervention. It provides free evaluation and then if needed, free speech therapy. And they come to your home. I'm pretty sure there is a similar program in Europe.
The early sessions of speech therapy are mainly oral exercises and picture naming. Oral exercises are blowing bubbles, blowing cotton balls across a table, tooting horns, drinking from a straw, drinking from a cup. The picture naming is really helpful too...the therapists have pictures of everyday items - milk, cookie, meal, bathroom, bed. Cat, dog, baby etc etc. First the mom or therapist names the picture then the little one has to name it - even if they dont say it right, they have to make an attempt. I was asked to use these pictures throughout the day. If my son wanted milk, I'd ask him to point to the picture and try to say it. And he doesnt get the thing that he wants until he at least tries to say it.
Also, alot of reading will also help. Point to the pictures in the books, name everything too.
If the comprehension is there, the speech will come! Hope this helps!
Thanks Mamaof3!
I am in US and I have read about Early Intervention program... but i guess my question was what is expected from a 14 month old boy.....? in terms of language words..... and wanted to know from moms of other kids of that age about when they actually started saying words.....
maybe my doctor will be more helpful at his 15 months but i was just getting curious....
another thing is, my son is in day care during the day, where everyone speaks english....
and when he comes home, my husband and I try to talk in urdu in front of him so he can learn urdu as well.... but i dont know if thats helping or just confusing him more in terms of what to say..... u know what i mean?
Re: vocabulary of a 14 month old....
aha yes I see. For a typical 15 month old, they should speak at least 10 words. But thats for a single-language environment. When there are two languages then it takes more time so the guidelines dont apply as much. They are learning twice as much so I dont think its confusing for them as much as it is lots of info to process so it just takes longer.
My eldest (delayed) spoke about 3 words at age 15 months. My middle son (typical) was almost conversational, was putting 2 and 3 words together by 15 months. And youngest spoke I think 5 or 6. But ours is a single language environment.
Probably your doc will tell you that he is right on target due to his two-language environment but also to contact Early Intervention to help speed things along. I'd not worry...I put myself thru so much worry with my youngest who was just a late bloomer. And the EI services were really great.
Re: vocabulary of a 14 month old....
my daughter started out slow too, at 14 mths she was saying only a few words consistantly, mostly baby talk, her paediatrician wasn't concerened though because she had good receptive language skills (responding to speech by listening to you talk, ability to understand and respond to familiar sounds and words) which is an important milestone that comes before expressive language.
EI services work best if your paediatrician gives your child a referral, otherwise on your own its a long tedious process, can be overwhelming because they mostly deal with serious developmental delays linked to Downs, Autism and so on. Your son's ped is the best source of info for you because he/she will take into account your child's development as a whole and address your concerns from a professional point of view.

Sanna don't worry about it. Keep talking to him and speaking to him continuously. May be you haven't spoke to him very much.
I sawa my sisters daughter spoke after may be 18 month or 2 years or close to 2 years.
As in daycard the lady may be use to ask him or say done after finishing. You keep saying or asking him after finishing then he will respond to you too. Or ask her when or what she says or does when he says that.
Keep talking to him. He will learn insha Allah. There is nothing to worry. You might ask the doctor or get him checked to make sure.
