I was trying to do a test install of the new ESX 3.02 on a Dell Inspiron D610 and it keeps crashing with a kernel panic. Has anyone tried doing that on that same (or different) platform? I couldn’t find any info on it anywhere. Help!!

TB, you need to upgrade the BIOS of VMWRE, compatible with your DELL INSPIRON, check the forums on VMWARE..

Made it working on HP laptops (few versions) didnt give any problem at all. I never tried installing it on Dell.

How can I upgrade the Bios of VMware if i can’t even install it? I’ll try updating the Bios of the laptop itself and see if that works.

Which Linux Distro. you are using as a host system?

VMWare has its own custom distro which installs on the machine as a thin OS and then you just create VM images and run on it. One can actually find older PCs/laptops and cluster them all using ESX, the guest images don't know what they are sitting on.

OK, I got it.
I was just reading some info about VMWare ESX. They say its support for different kinds of hardware is quite limited. Their advice is to check for the hardware compatibility before deciding to install it on notebooks. From your post and some newsgroups it looks like, Dell D610 is not a good bet yet for VMWare thin OS.
But anyway if you succeed you might consider to share your experience with others :)

The reason I was installing on that lappy is cuz its hard drive is so easy to replace, just pop out the XP installed harddrive and put in a blank one and ur ready to play. I might try this on one of these hp servers I have (which gives me the same options) and test it out.
