Can someone tell me all the Punjabi wedding customs and rituals in detail?
I’ve seen some videos of weddings in my village and there are some extra rituals, which we don’t do over here, all that happens here is Mangni (engagement), Nikaah (actual wedding ceremony hosted by the girls family) and Waleemah (post-wedding reception party hosted by the groom).
I want to know about Mehndi, Sehrabandi, Shagan, Dholki, Haldi, Karroli, Sarbaala, Phera, Doli etc.
I have a vague idea of what they are but don’t know what order they go in and what happens etc.
Another funny ritual I’ve noticed is criticising the other side, happens on the wedding day itself, we’re they all sing boliyaaN/tappey or something and bash the other side, lol, reminds me of rapping, what that all about?
chaar phere around the GGS is only for sikhs.. remember there are punjabi hindus also… they do saath phere around the fire.. (but then it is a common ritual for ALL hindus not just punjabi hindus)
not necessarily... cos tons of punjabis i know dont look kashmiri at all (ya know that tall fair thing) east punjabis cud be pretty fair but many are swarthy (but tall and handsome)...
According to my limited knowledge and have added some in order
Shagan, - well all of these are shagans, other small rituals perfromed during all this names as shugun. mostly used as when you first fix the date for wedding at brides house.
Dholki, - start weeks before the acutally wedding at every night. with small drum beting and girls sing fold songs
Haldi, or Ubton they basically cover you with Ubton-(yellow color stuff) for beuaty mask. mostly for girls
Mayon, - after this night bride and groom are suppose to stay at home and dont go out until the wedding day. close friend try to tear the grooms dress and he will slap them(so they will get married soon)
Mehndi, - henna on both groom and bride sides happend one or two days before the wedding day.
Karroli, - basically a decorated pot fill of water, and guys sister in law (bhabi) has to dance while keeping this on her head(mostly its filled after that;)). happens before the sehra bandi
Khara, - the water from Karroli is used to give bath to groom with dress on. he also break some pots by jumpin on it. - shagan
Sehrabandi, sehra or kulla is put on the head of the mr groom, and ideally he would ride a white horse .
Sarbaala, sharbala or shehbala in urdu is bestman of Groom.
Phera, dont have clue about it. may be hindu pheras of agni
Doli, the traditional ride for bride after wedding day ends and bride is move to groom place. doli is pushed or given a shoulder by brides brothers/cousins/ uncles when it leave from bride house/hall.
Weelma - reception from guys side. after the wedding day.
Maklawa - after waleema reception, brides family take bride and groom with them to stay at brides place for 1 night.
groom family go and bring both of them back and finally the wedding end!!
