BAGHDAD, Iraq - Car bombs rocked Iraq’s two holiest Shiite cities Sunday, killing at least 43 people and wounding scores of others, while in downtown Baghdad dozens of gunmen carried out a brazen ambush on car, killing three employees of the organization running next month’s elections.
The bombings came just over an hour apart — first a suicide blast that ripped through minibuses and crowds of people at the entrance of the main bus station in the city of Karbala, then a car bomb in a central square of Najaf during a funeral attended by the city police chief and provincial governor.
The violence was the latest in an insurgent campaign to disrupt the crucial Jan. 30 elections, the first national polls since the fall of Saddam Hussein — and they were the latest attacks to target Shiite Muslims, the majority community in Iraq and the most likely to dominate the vote.
Its sad, but this was kind of expected before and during the elections. Its a risk iraqis are going have to take. im just wondering why security isnt being tightened esp during these days, the last thing we want is a civil war, right?
Depends who "we" is Ma Mooli. The thugs would like to see Iraq become a black hole of nothingness as they see that hurting the U.S. The silver lining if such occurred? It may force the U.S. to spend large sums of money on creating alternative energy sources in the name of national security, something that should have been done long ago.
So ineffect the 'thugs' efforts are not in vain? i believe thier main objective is to get rid of the US, rather then turn Iraq into a pit of nothingness. So If thats the way Iraq ends up along the way, then so be it right?
you'd think US would have figured it out by now, but it seems war is the easy way out for them. needless to say, it'll also bring extra benefits along side, such as being able to pull strings whilst sitting in the white house etc.
