My brother has vitiligo. whitish patches appear on the skin. He is using ointment and tablet. But still no use. Is there other treatment for this like plastic surgery?
Re: vitiligo
Nobody knows??
Re: vitiligo
I don't think there's a cure for that.
Re: vitiligo
Are you sure??
Re: vitiligo
there is no cure to reverse the effects. There are treatments out there that can speed up the whitening process so that your whole body is uniform colored..otherwise people usually have patches of white and brown...not a good look.
Re: vitiligo
Oh God! Even there is no plastic surgery??
Re: vitiligo
Please consult a dermatologist. There is some remedy for such a problem. Basically, you can be provided with medication that can increase or decrease the melanin which dictates skin color.
By increasing the melanin, your brother can be made darker (more likely his own skin tone) or like Michael Jackson who is suspected of having the same affliction, you can eliminate the production of melanin, creating that pale white tone.
You do not need surgery if you brother has developed this recently as it can be rectified swiftly.
Please seek medical advice as there are several options available for vitiligo.
Re: vitiligo
My doctor told me there was no cure. Its just something you have to live with. Embrace it. I have.

Yes, there is. My cousin has vitiligo, just a patch on her neck tho. When she was younger she had skin grafts but it's really painful and it really didn't make that much difference, nowadays there are much better treatments. She's due to have laser treatment later this yr which has worked great on others with the same condition. I would look into that if I were u, it's v.expensive but prob the only thing that will work. She uses Dermablend camouflage makeup right now to cover it up when she's out but of course she can't use that all the time and it really affects her confidence.
Re: vitiligo
what is the name of the laser treatment.?

My brother is taking medicine but still no use.
Re: vitiligo
Tell your brother not to worry about it. It isn't an ifectious disease or something. Yes it may affect his self image a bit to see a change in physical apprearance but thank God he is a normal and healthy individual. Some of us may have problems that we even don't know of.
Re: vitiligo

She is going to have Excimer laser treatment, it isn’t that widely available but there have been studies that show that it is effective. Here is some info:
Vitiligo - & the XTRAC Excimer Laser
Narrow-Band UVB phototherapy is a a cheaper treatment that also works in many cases (not well at all tho on hands or feet) , u might want to check that out as well:

Michael Jackson used a cream called Benoquin (which is now not available as the manufacturer has stopped making it) to depigment, it's v.dangerous as it can lead ppl to develop skin cancer (as he is also suspected of having). Users of it were meant to very very careful in the sun cos their skin becomes sensitive cos of their lack of melanin, they have to always use sunblock (no matter how sunny or not the day is), are not meant to allow their skin to be exposed to sunlight, must use umbrellas etc. which is nearly impossible. That drug was also only really recommended for ppl who had vitiligo on 50% or more of their body. Like u mentioned the person wouldn't merely turn 'normal' white, it's super pale, almost a 'goth' type white skin shade.
